National Identity Card? In The USA? Just Three Years Away to a National Database

National Identity Card? In The USA? Just Three Years Away to a National Database (my title)
CNET/News.com ^ | 6 May 2005 | Declan McCullagh

Starting three years from now, if you live or work in the United States, you'll need a federally approved ID card to travel on an airplane, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments, or take advantage of nearly any government service. Practically speaking, your driver's license likely will have to be reissued to meet federal standards.

The Real ID Act hands the Department of Homeland Security the power to set these standards and determine whether state drivers' licenses and other ID cards pass muster. Only ID cards approved by Homeland Security can be accepted "for any official purpose" by the feds.

In exchange for federal cash, states must agree to link up their databases. Specifically, the Real ID Act says it hopes to "provide electronic access by a state to information contained in the motor vehicle databases of all other states."

What would this card do that the current driver licence and state identity card won't do?

We also already have a national ID card - it's called a Social Security Card.

The problem with those you can thank the Liberals for.....they have been fighting for the Illegals to get legal identity cards and legal drivers licesnses making them look like upstanding legal residents , which of course they are not.

Enough states are insisting on this they are forcing the government to do the very thing that gets the liberals lace panties ina bunch....a national ID card.

I was born and raised in California, lived my whole life here, mostly. When I was going through drivers education while in high school I was taught that driving was a privilege. The one thing I dont understand about this whole giving illegals drivers licenses is, how is it that driving is a privilege for me but a right for illegal aliens?

I always wondered about this.... are we one nation or just abunch of independent states? It's rather rediculous that rules for something that is honored nation wide (driver licenses) are issued on varying standards.

Other than some hysteria people are having "feds" having more power, I don't see anything wrong with this....
We are supposed to be one nation consisting of independently sovereign states. Unfortunately, this has apparently all but been lost.

That concept disintegrated in 1865.

How is it different from a drivers licence and SS card? In fact, I wouldn't mind it if it were to replace the DL. People make all kind of quips about it but no one has mentioned what the problem is, in real life. With identity theft and terrorism what they are now, I really don't have a problem with a good reliable ID that is harder to forge. Hell, I got dinged on my credit report years ago for not paying for stuff on a charge card. Reason I didn't pay was that I didn't even know that store existed nor did I even know what they were selling. I have gotten things on my credit report that I don't recognize. And yes, a credit report is important to me because it is what the bank uses to see if they need to loan me money and it is what I use to see if I will extend a customer any credit.

Does that mean we'll be getting a different ID card for each arm of the local and federal government?

So this one will be for the Office of Homeland Security.
My drivers license will be for my Local DMV, US territories and Canada.
My Social Security will be for everything else and taxes.
My passport I guess will be for foreign governments.
If you are a legal immigrant in this country you'll need that Green Card too.

Man i'm going to need one of those wallets with 18 slots
