What do you mean? Passing counterfeit bills has been tried PLENTY of times! Since when does something being a federal offense make a difference?..... (drugs, murder, tax evasion, etc.....)

I am trying to sell a $350 Dodge pickup truck in the local trader. You won't believe the caliber of person who responds to $350 vehicle ads. I have just quit returning the calls (after calling 30 or so people back and answering all manner of bizarre questions and propositions). I will probably just give the truck to someone needy instead.

Do you think he'd recover anything? I'm not being argumentative, just wondering what that penalty would be and whether the awarded damages, if any, would offset the cost of a lawyer and court fees.

Anyway, it's a crummy thing for the guy to have done!

even if you don't get anything he will carry that conviction around....writing bad checks..which is the same as checks you don't intend to honor is the same thing...its not legal...

Still waiting for the second guy who I turned down in the first place to call back....he probably will by the end of the day and DID want the car.

IF this deal goes through and I do sell it im writing a nasty nasty email back to the first guy. I know he reads his emails!

Funny you mention that. A couple months ago I thought about selling it because I have so much stuff, of which the g/f is always happy to remind me. But she said that she liked it, and that I ought to keep it. I was stunned, but happily so!

I hate selling anything in the paper! Tons of weird people and calls. I remember when I sold my paintball gun a few years back I must have got a dozen weird calls. Finally a normal person showed up and bought it.

BHD I thought the point of a bank check is you have to pay for it in advance?

When I sold the Caddy, I was prepared for a bank draft. He forgot my last name, so when I showed up with the car, his wife presented me with all hundred dollar bills. My wife has some knowledge of counterfits, so checked them out and she thought they were fine. Took them to my Mpls. bank later that day and indeed they were legit. Normal, friendly people, so I didn't suspect much. Much like your buyers.

Its pretty unlikely to receive fake bills for a vehicle transfer. If you take them to a bank, and they turn out to be fake, the guy who gave them to you is responsable. And you will have his name and address.

Fakes are not hard to spot these days, learn how to spot them.

If you receive fake bills compared to bad checks, the govt is much more "on it" with the fake bills.

Depending on your location, some counties have programs for people who receive bad checks. Here in Los Angeles, they have a bad check restitution program, and if someone writes you a bad check for a significant amount, they might get your money for you. You should check it out, pun intended.
