Anyone know anything about VW?

Hey all - I'm thinking about moving along. My run with my diesel ahs been great, but diesel fuel is so expensive now and when my casr breaks its way too costly to fix.
Im looking at a Golf, ntohing too fancy, just good economy and reliability to get me to college and back this fall.

Anyone have any tips or pointers?

Also, there may be a 1993 300D 2.5 Turbo that VERY well maintained and just rolled over to 190k. Anyone interested?

Well...you can do a lot of work to a car for what the monthly payments on a new one would cost.

Are you sure that New Car + Payments + Repairs + gas will be less than Old Car + Repairs + Fuel?

Anyhow, that's how I'd look at it.

I own the 124 flat out, no monthly payments, so if I sold it, I would use the money to buy the Golf outright, with no payments.

I had a '93 Golf with a 5 speed. I was dissappointed with the mpg that I got (Low 20's). The engine would stall between shifts (w/ the A/C on) and in general was un-impressive. Several trips to the dealer were fruitless. I sold the car for $80 more than I owed on it and counted myself fortunate.

I hope the newer ones are a lot better. A guy I work with has a TDI...it is soooo quiet....reminds me of a sewing machine...claims he can get 50mpg if he observes the speed limit.

My friend has a 2003 GTI with a 1.8T and 5 speed... it's quite a zippy little car. The only problem he's had within 30K miles is that the blinkers on the side of the car collect water on the inside.

It seems pretty well built on the inside too but they don't get that great mpg (for a I4) if thats what you're going for all the way.
