Abortion stats surprise me

According to this page http://www.agi-usa.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html

About 20.9 out of a 1000 women had an abortion in 2002. That's about 1 in 50 in 2002. The numbers pretty much hold for the previous two years and I'm guessing they'll hold for the next coupla years. That's just amazing to me. Do you know 50 women of childbearing age? Out of these 50 women, what are the chances that one of them had an abortion? What are the chances that one of them will have had an abortion during their childbearing years?

Nobody talks about it, but that number is pretty staggering to me. Statiscally I can't just walk about and wonder who has had one and who hasn't. Nobody I know has told me they've had one, and nobody I know knows anyone who has had one. Am I walking in rarified air?

I think its the same handfull of women who keep going back over and over and over becasue they are too lazy to use birth control.......skewing the numbers....

I guess it just surprises me that the number is so high. Guess it's a real private matter.

It takes two to tango. For every irresponsible woman that gets pregnate, there are one or more men who were equally irresponsible.

I'd imagine the rate is actually higher as this is a very personal thing.
well when she says "I am on the pill" its not the guys fault........

Now if he says "trust me" then it is....

I wonder if that number counts people who have had abortions, or the number of abortions performed. I would suspect that people who have abortions often have more than one in their lifetime, and therefore the number of women who actually have them is lower than the statistics would suggest.

Speaking personally, I don't know anyone who has had an abortion, but I highly doubt that anyone I know would broadcast that information. I do, however, know people who know people who have had an abortion (multiple), so maybe it's just that nobody wants to broadcast that to ME.

Now here's an interesting conclusion from the posted link...

"The risk of death associated with childbirth is about 11 times as high as that associated with abortion."

40 million potential people have been killed since 1973's Roe V. Wade. Since mostly Democrats support abortion, they are not reproducing themselves out of existance.

I don't immediately recall the statistic, but the risk of death associated with childbirth is even greater than 11 times when the woman has had an abortion previously.

The only thing I'm suprised at is the numer isn't higher. To many women an abortion is a right of passage and they have the men so whipped that they don't dare reveal that they are pro life.

I wonder how many in that statistic had to have the abortion because of rape, incest or health issues I'll bet its a very low number.

One thing for sure is that religion has less to do with a woman's choice to have an abortion than life's pressures.

43% Protestant, 27% Catholic. 3/4 say having a baby would interfere with their lives, 2/3 say they can't afford it.

I'm surprised the stats aren't higher.

"it is estimated that 35% of all women of reproductive age in America today will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45... Women between the ages of 15 and 19 account for about 19% of all abortions; women 20 to 24 account for another 33%; and about 25% of abortions are obtained by women who are 30 or older... most women who have abortions have had no previous abortions (52%) or one previous abortion (26%)" -- http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/facts/women_who.html
