Time at work and time off.

How much time do folks here spend doing work related things in an average week?

And how much time do folks spend doing non-work related things?

What is a long work session when measured in days or weeks?

How many days off per week or per month or year do folks take?

TIA

This should be an interesting thread. Varying careers dictate a wide variety of work commitments...such as the medical profession or retaurant management.

I can't allot more than 9 or so hours per day at my job given commuting requirements and a dependent at home awaiting both working parents. But both of us allocate additional hours of work when at home given that we both have telecommuting capabilites at home.

Though these days, a lot of non-work related tasks are performed on the job (such as surfing this forum). But the lines are blurred anyway.

My longest work session that I recall was a 180-hour 14-day marathon for meeting an incredible deadline...

Howdy All,
Most of the time I work 6 days a week. I might get a week during company shut-down in Dec. Most of the time I have so much vacation time built up I have to sell it back to the company or lose it. The longest stretch I worked was 3 months without a day off. Longest day I have worked is 24 hours.

Thanks for the contributions so far!

I want to make it clear that I’m not asking how much time anyone works. I’m asking how much time is devoted to work. As example some folks are required to be on call 7 days a week, but don’t actually have to do work devoted things for all hours in this time frame. Commuting to and from work are part of the work day. Some folks have work shifts that are 8 hours, others 12 hours, some will put in an occasional 16 hour day. Some may work only an hour a day, but still be obligated to hang out for the phone to ring, an email to arrive, or a stock to tick or….

The primary question is out of a typical week how many days are you obligated to devote to work, be it on call, doing research, or surfing the web? By extension, how many days per month?

The other side of this is how many days do you wake up knowing that you are not going to have to do any work related things? Again, by extension, do you take 2 days a week off? In a year do you take 1 week of vacation or 5 or ??? In fact, as yet another nosy question, when you take time off, how many days in a row do you typically take?

I work in what we call a construction support industry. I either supervise, or perform various inspection services to builders, or contractors. I respond to calls from about 6 am to 6PM, 5 days a week, with the occasional saturday if the job/ client requires it, very rare to work Sunday. Sometimes, a concrete contractor will do a floor slab starting at 1 or 2 am, to beat the sun and heat, but thats unusual.
Availible for work--typically 24/ 6 1/2
Actually time charged averages 50 hr, but has been twice that.

I work for myself as a "freelancer" in the television business. Thus, I work different hours every week. The longest stretch I did was 28 days straight a couple years ago. I'd just broken up with a gal, so it was the perfect thing at the time.

Some days, I'll work for one client from 8:00 am until 4:00pm, then go over to Comcast and technical direct their newscasts until nearly 2:00 am the next day. Do that a few days in a row and you're pretty well spent! But when you work for yourself, you take the work when it comes because there may be a week here and there where you've only got two or three days of work!

As for vacation, I just took a week in CO. First vacation in about 2 1/2 years.

It's turned out well for me since going out on my own four years ago. It took two years to double what I'd been making in salary after eight devoted years to a network that eventually went under and even stopped payment on my last paycheck! I still have it as a momento....
