E300 advice.
 

A friend of mine is on vacation and came across a 1999 E300 with 172K for 12k. It has full service history and says it looks almost new. Is that too many miles for a everyday driver? I will put 50K on them a year, one thing I don't want is a major in the first year.

That's a helluva good price for one of those, and no, that's not too many miles in the least bit, especially if it's been regularly serviced by pros--don't be wishywashy, get it fool!

If the maintenance records show that the vehicle was cared for, I wouldn't be overly concerned about the mileage. The price is excellent. Turbodiesel recently picked one up from Herb Phillips with 250K on the clock. A lot of little BS but the engine and transmission appear to be solid.

But, remember 50K per year puts it up close to 300K in two years. Don't plan on keeping it too much past that point.

If the story checks out I'm sending them a check, strangly enough the best price I've found is less than 150 miles from me. It might be my lucky day! :) :)

I ran da figures and I should save around 4K a year with fuel @ $3.00 gallon and that does not reflect vo use during the summer or the cost of truck tires vs car tires. I've also found that my trucks cost more to work on than my previous mb's.

Since its a 1999 I can finance it as a lease with a $1 buyout, which helps with the business tax write off since its going to be used soley for biz and I will use the truck for pulling and hunting.

Change glow plugs and put antisieze on the threads and you are good to go on that end. I love the car although it is technically the wife's car but actually is our workhorse.

I'm getting anxious myself.........style, diesel and I'll have that star in front of me again :)

My mom has the same year/mileage car and it has no problems at all. She loves it. ~35mpg around town and ~45mpg on the highway. That is a really good price too even with that much mileage. It has excellent power around town i.e. low-mid rev which is unlike any MB diesel that I have ever driven (quite a few). Throw in the performance chip ($300) very respectable (much better than the E320) 0-60 times too.

I'd say expect more of 30-35 mpgs, and as for the block heater, if its in good shape, you most likely wont need it. My has started in subzero temps with 15-50 wieght oil in it. Good luck and check out the spring perches for rust, I just noticed some on my 98

Where are you at? Where will the car be? I went thru a winter last year with the car inside the garage and didn't need the extension cord. If you need it, the block heater is there already.

Heres the deal it has a vibration @ 55 mph that they can't find. They have replaced the brakes and tires but its still vibrating.

Ask for rick and you might get a super deal. The rest of its history is up to spec with MB dealership service.

Could be that the wheels are out of round or that the flex disc and the center support bearing are having problems or maybe the rear end. Either way, that is your excuse to not drive 55. :D
