There's supposedly a high-def DVD available (surround sound? hmm...)

Some of the physics behind it (by physics students):

I've known about it for a few years but just managed to find a working link, its by far the coolest car video I've ever seen with the exception of my own of course.

The lucky few MBshoppers that have seen my doing 185 on a highway exit ramp will know what I'm talking about.

Cynical...Me...?

I dont know if this is entirely believeable... I mean maybe its just the quality of the video but to me it all seems somewhat staged... also having done some racing and being a driver for a living somehow the sound of the tyres on the road, the accelleration of the engine do not go with the what you can see on screen.... There were parts where if you watch closely the car is travelling in a straight line yet you can hear the tyres squealing... Trust me, tyres take a lot of grief before you can hear them especially that loud...(also above the wail of the V12???)...Also on the straights the car sounds as if it is accellerating furiously but when other street cars are overtaken it all seems rather leisurely.... put it this way, I have my doubts on the sound and filming... as for someone having the balls for drive around in that crazy manner... it happens...

I thought I saw some realatively leisurely overtaking of vehicles, like maybe doing 50 passing someone doing 30. Other times though, it looked like 120 or more. Who knows.

I've always liked that model but for some reason, the one I want someday when I'm rich and famous (any day now) is the late 60s 330 GTC. I'd seen it in Road and Track and didn't take too much notice but then when Yves Montand or his wife, I forget, drove up in one in the movie Grand Prix, homina-homina, I wanted that car, I mean wanted it.

I hear they're pretty hard to time though. I would think so -- 12 cyl. with breaker points, etc.? Might be fun to do though.

I am downloading the file off of an ED2k server now. I am about half a percent done. I am going to leave the computer on, and let this download. I got a new dual layer DVD burner, so if this is good quality, I will most certainly make a few copies availible for some members.

Did you happen to check out the the physics link? The story about it is well documented. Check out the road quality.

C'etait un Rendezvous is the creation of the French filmmaker Claude Lelouch in 1976. Using a Ferrari 275 GTB early one August morning, Lelouch attached a camera to the bumper of the car and sped through the streets of Paris. He gave the driver a set route from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, which is straight through the heart of Paris. The driver is still unknown to this day, because Lelouch was never able to obtain a permit to close the streets. The driver, who Lelouch told officials was an F1 racer, went over the speed limit and blew off many red lights. When this film was first shown, Lelouch was arrested, and because of this, the footage has spent many years underground before it began to resurface on DVD a few years ago. Lelouch used a new technology of the time, a gyro stabilized camera mount, in order to mount the camera on the car. The problem with this is that the technology of the time only allowed for a ten minute film with this mount. Lelouch told his driver to rush because of this time limit, and the video itself is only about nine minutes. In our velocity graph, we used all footage of the car when it was in motion.

To make a distance-time graph for Claude Lelouch's trip, we tried to mark off Paris landmarks such as large boulevards and restaurants. Between each landmark, we would record the times then, using MapQuest and Expedia, recorded the distances between each landmark. Lelouch traveled down some roads in the wrong direction, making our job tougher. When he was nearing his destination, the Sacred Heart Basilica, he made a number of twists and turns down streets we could barely find on maps. Luckily we found a large restaurant, Le Consulat, on a one-way street.

I forwarded the link to a friend at Nissan in the advertising side. He said Nissan did a 6 minute "remake" of Rendez-vous three years ago in Prague for the launch of the 350Z - but with the co-operation of the city, closed off streets, etc, directed by John Bruno (who won an Oscar for something or other), Jimmy Roberts as stunt driver, speeds up to 125 mph. I lived in Prague for a couple of years, the idea of doing 125 on all but one or two streets there is terrifying. He's sending me the DVD, should be good. If it's doable, I'll try to make the file available, or it might be hosted somewhere online.

pretty cool, especially the sound, but I can't believe the streets of Paris are so smooth; or is it damping at the camera's mount?

Search for "Getaway in Stockholm" for a similar hair raising experience.

Stockholm was a little too "Fu Manchu-ish" for me. The French film has a bit more style. Kind of like the old Pike's Peak record setting film , "Climb Dance".

Lost track of the red lights, too busy white-knuckling the key board and stomping the non-existant brake pedal!! Fastest I have ever been was 120 in a early 70's Matador, front floating everywhere, on awful Lake Martin road. So scary and unstable all I could do was glance at the speedo. Never felt compelled to try it again, much less on city streets!! Can see how the feel would be exhilarating though!! Who could not love the sound of power and speed together! Fun clip. I imagined he was running late for work.
