Thanks all for the well wishes -- they may be helping. So far, so good -- pain is minimal (knock on wood). I went home with a catheter at the surgery site that's connected a PainBuster®. This PainBuster® is a balloon pump about the size of an orange, which dispenses a local anesthetic over a period of about five days. Once it's empty, I can pull out the catheter. I'm not sure how I'm going to sleep with this thing attached to me, but it has a profound impact on pain level. This is in addition to enough oxycodone to choke a horse.

Actually, that was oxycontin. One oxycontin pill provides 12-hour time release of up to 8 oxycodone pills. Ol' Rush was supposedly up to 30 oxycontins per day. That's the equivalent of 240 Percocets per day. Amazing that anyone could do that and live to tell the story. Conclusion: I may have gotten enough oxycodone pills to choke a horse, but not enough to choke Rush.

Two days later I was taken by ambulance to Scarborough Grace Hospital as I could not pee. I was in the emergency dept for 24 hours and then sent to a ward bed. Shortly after getting there the bed was flooded three times with large volumes of reddish brown puss about five hours apart, requiring complete bedding change, on the third batch a nurse noticed the wound had opened and this muck was coming out. They cleaned it up and a couple of days later I was sent home. Home nursing was set up and a nurse came in every day to change the dressing and swill out the wound. About a week later I went back to St Mikes and the "surgeon" opened the wound more to "allow it to drain". I had home nursing coming in for 192 days to change the dressings before it finally healed. One year later the hernia repair broke while coughing and again I had a lump the size of a baseball hanging between my legs. Finally in 2008 I went to Sholdice who were rather picky (Note at this point I was eighty years old) and I had to have several tests done for heart and leg circulation as I had had couple of deep vein thromboses over the last ten years likely caused by spending far too log each day on my computer and web site. (http://aspartame.ca). Finally they did the job though at the time I was having rather severe asthma attacks. I was afraid the coughing would break the repair but NO, it held through some VERY bad coughing attacks similar to one that broke the St Mikes surgery. At Sholdice they keep you for three days after the surgery. Two days after the surgery I went for a walk and suddenly felt something running down my leg. I applied pressure and yelled for help which took a little time. It appears that there was some material that had to come out. Went home next day. A week later my daughter took me back for a checkup. Everything OK. We left with the intent to do some shopping but as I got out of her SUV again felt something running down my leg. Having survived having my home round my ears when it was hit by a 500 lb bomb in London in WW2 and surviving several drops in the airborne and then over 30 years as a police officer in Toronto (my birthplace) I seem to remain completely calm and cool in emergencies. We called Sholdice and they said to return, about a 15 minute drive. I kept pressure on the wound. Got there and was examined and patched up with a dressing and arrangements for a nurse to come daily to clean and re dress the wound, about and inch and a quarter long. I am happy to say that it is healing exceptionally fast. Another point is that after the surgery there was a ball of apparently a blood clot still in the testicle area that the Doctor said would take 6 months to a year to go. I have a surprise for them as it is nearly vanished in approx a month and a half which I believe was reduced by an enzyme I have been taking called "Serrapeptase". It is made by "Doctors Best" (http://drvitamins.com) which you may find a very useful material for yourself. Its been used in Europe for over 30 years with no problems. Very helpful if you have lung problems and large lumps where I did. It has cleaned my lungs of a lot of obviously old crap. As a final point when I went back to Sholdice the surgeon told my daughter and I that he had been repairing hernias for over 25 years and that I had had one of the worst he had seen and that the St Mikes quack had left a hell of a mess that he had to clean up first. If you have a hernia don't mess about. Go to Sholdice and get it fixed once and for all. Go elsewhere and you stand a very good chance of having a repeat. In Ontario OHIP covers the operation but not the semi private accommodation so unless you have other insurance coverage it will cost you a bit over C$ 400. I sure am glad I went there. JLinnell
