Don't let your daughters watch some Disney movies

Some of you here may know that I supplement my non-existent student income by babysitting on the side.

Well, tonight we ended up watching some really really bad Disney movies. Let me state my case. After some serious pondering tell me if I am wrong.

Cinderella-had the prince not seeked her out (via the slipper) she would still be a pee-on maid.

Sleeping Beauty- had the Prince not kissed her, she would still be snoozing in the tower.

Alladin- he beckons Jasmine to his magic carpet so he can "Show her the world!'. Well, wasn't he a beggar before? I doubt if he has seen the world himself. How the heck can he show her the world if he himself has not even been out of the county.

There are many other movies like this but this line takes the cake.....

"When you wish upon a star,....blah blah blah..., your DREAMS WILL COME TRUE!" -----wow, is that all it takes? forget about working hard and getting a good education. Just wish upon a star or find some prince (and hope he's not a crackhead) and your dreams will come true.

This is the wrong message we are exposing these young kids to. Since I did not spend my "Disney" growing-up years in the US, I see all this from a different angle. This isn't a man-bashing thread! I'm just amazed as far as these movies go.

my $0.02

That stuff started long before Disney made a fortune animating it. Regardless, no one believes it; right?

you miss my point.

this has nothing to do with disney's profits now or then.

of course no ADULT believes all that wishing upon a star crap.

Do you think kids know the difference? That's my whole point.

I think they are important socializing techniques in the subjection of women. I've always tried to keep my daughter away from them, not always successfully. I have similar qualms about the Chronicles of Narnia.

And someone will tell me father Christmas and the tooth fairy are real too...

The kids watch all sorts of junk on the tv, video, cd's et al....it's become a defense when the kids act up to say they can't tell the diff' between fantasy and reality !..........

I remember at 4 or 5 years old, crying, when the pigeon was struck by lightning and fell out the sky in a cartoon at the movies.....my grandmother spent the rest of the evening bribing me with ice cream to get me to shut up !

How about the leper and the seven midgits ?

Or maybe Brothers Grimm ?

Hans Christian Andersen ?.

The frog and princess ?.

Jack and the bean stalk.....talk about double entendre.......

"Dont let you kids grow up to be cowboys "

My personal opinion is, Harry Potter has surpassed the Teletubbies for total brain washing.

Thumbs up

Gotta agree with DKveuro here....
'specially on the HP stuff...

JenTay; Since you didn't grow up here FYI: It's a well known fact that Walt Disney hated kids.... Alot of his movies were meant to scare them. Bambi sees her mother get shot. That'll do it.

A lot of the old cartoons were geared for adult audiences. Case in point are the old Warner Bros. Loony Toons. There are many hidden jokes in them that juvenile minds can't pick up. Many times Bugs Bunny is a cross dresser to pull some joke on someone. In Hillbilly Hare he cross dresses to fool two Ozark hillbillies into square dancing with him.

There is an interesting Harry Potter thread going . . . one of the most striking statements I read in that thread was when someone offered that Harry Potter and friends must work for what they experience and do not stand on the sidelines waiting for life to simply pass by them. The mystical keeps the readers intrigued since it is other than our sick political scene and at the same time may render readers who do not buy the free-lunch mentality.

When Christmas and whatever is included in the mystical mix (earlier in this thread) as something to be scorned, we could, of course, include any of your favorite Bibles references. I don't think that was the point though of this particular thread.

The Disney stories were not movies as I was going through my early years, yet I have now read/seen most of them. I agree they may lead to some ideas and expectations that never will materialize in real life. Do our children grow up too fast today? Do we expect them to become mature beings to conform to what we wish we had accomplished? I don't know. I was fortunate enough to be the primary care provider for my two sons and enjoyed it more than anything else I have ever done. They are now in their mid twenties and have remained very satisfied with their lives. Not base on my expecations or wishes but rather their own. They moved out. They moved back in. They have never gone through a period of time where they felt the need to NOT openly express their love for each other and all of their family.

They watched He Man and Fraggile Rock (names probably not correct) along with many other programs but spent more time outdoors. He Man skipped across those flat rocks . . . the boys improvised by laying some of my collectable 78s along the living room floor. Broken collectables when I thought I had child proofed . . . neither of them ever showed the desire to become police or military though they played those roles as they grew. They treat their lady friends as human equals and with respect that makes me envy their ways. We have learned from each other and I don't think what they read or watched had but a fraction of the impact experiencing life had. Death being nothing in the movies and stories . . . when my oldest killed a man in an auto accident he was devastated. He will always be carrying that burden. He certainly does not exhibit any feelings of "the victim will be back next episode".

I don't know if what today's children are exposed to would be better than generations of the past . . . having loving families must play some role . . .

Just like any other movie or book or experience in life, it is the duty and responsibility of the parents to help the child make sense of the world.

Oh, Jeez.... You guys are taking this stuff SERIOUSLY? They're cartoons and fairy tales, for chrissakes!

If someone's kids don't know the difference between that and REALITY, then it might be a good time for them to start doing some actual PARENTING!

I'd better head for the attic and look for my tinfoil hat again.

Forget the hat. Physicists claim it doesn't work! I think they had a design flaw in their hats, but I dunno.

Ted (W126) has the best collection of hat designs. I'm sure he'd sell you one at a bargain price. He charges on a volume basis. Uh, the volume that needs protecting.

Perhaps Ted can show you some photos he's shared with us over the years?
