Which one did you get Carleton? I still use an old original Monarch in my on farm butcher shop. It is used to heat the building and provides us with hot water for clean up as well as cooking our meals while butchering. Our stove's grates are set up for either wood or coal. We use coal because it's cheaper and it burns longer and hotter. Have your wife bake some homemade bread or baked potatoes in it. You will never go back to gas or electric baking.

The Monarch,of course. Have one here in Halesite,in Vermont I have an old Queen Atlantic with a wood firebox.

Both have hot water fronts, hooked up to range boilers for domestic hot water supply.

I use coal down here on the island and wood exclusively in Vt,on account of the acreage up there with oak, locust{the best heating wood}and maple, lots of deadfall on 20 acres, just need a chainsaw and a cart and there you are.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said,"cut your own wood and it will warm you twice".

That's one fine looking stove. It looks like the one our Monarch replaced. That one was a Range Eternal. We used the poor old thing to death. The oven panel between the water reservoir and oven finally burned out and I was afraid of a fire. I sold the thing on a neighbors farm auction and bought the old Monarch. My new/old Monarch doesn't have the warming oven on top it just has a built in spice shelf in it's place. I love those old stoves, Aladdin lamps, pocket watches etc. etc.

Thanks for the link. I bookmarked it. Right now I am looking at two Aladdin Model B's with Washington swirl fonts sitting next to me. Upstairs is my grandad's nickel font Model B Aladdin. I hit the jackpot when an old time hardware store in my area sold me what they called a box of junk. That box of junk was full of NOS Aladdin parts. Bug screens, chimneys, wicks, wick cleaners etc. Most of the box I used to help other Aladdin nuts. The old price tags were still on some of the parts. IIRC a mantle was something like two bits back when the parts were on the shelf.

You are lucky,I bought a carton of 40 Aladdin mantles for $5.00 at auction 2 years ago but the wicks and chimneys remain fairly expensive.

Still cheaper than electricity though.

I curse and swear when a damn moth drops down the chimney and hits a mantle. Or when someone tweeks the wick too high and soots the mantle so I have to crank it down on dim for a few minutes. Still they give off wonderfull light and sure are cozy warm in the winter.
