Well, if anyone's interested, I have an appointment for a Maytag repairman to come fix my fridge.

The first available slot is next Wednesday!! Or I can pay an additional $30 to have him come tomorrow. No thanks. The fridge is still cooling, so I'll wait.

BTW, they charge a flat rate for labor of $138. Parts are extra.

I actually tested it and found that it draws only 2 amps when it's running............of course it's running just about all the time.

In another life I was an appliance technician. Once I had a service call, much like yours sfloriII, where the customer swore up and down they could smell Freon and demanded that I repair the 'leak' before their refrigerator stopped cooling.

The minute I opened the door to the fridge, I could smell the distinct odor of a piece of citrus fruit, long past it's prime. It didn't take me much more than a minute to find a highly sophisticated grapefruit stuck in the back of the crisper drawer. The next 15 minutes were used repeatedly explaining to the customer that Freon had no odor and, if you did have any kind of a refrigerant leak, the machine would run, at best 10-12 hours before completely ceasing to cool.

In another life, I was a Landlord (or was it this life???) and one of the tenants decided to defrost the freezer (old style metal condenser shell) with a knife. Punctured the aluminum.

A distinct odor of freon?? was present for a short period. Naturally, all cooling ceased after that point.

She rented from me too.

Good to know it most likely isn't freon!

I did check both the freezer and fridge and removed any old stuff-- odor is still there. But there must be some kind of coolant problem since items are simply not as cold-- ice cream is soft and milk isn't as cold. I did "turn up" the fridge to a colder temp with no noticable results.

Brian, that was vaporized refrigerant oil you smelled. Freon is odorless. A catastrophic leak will transport out some of the oil and you'll smell it. A tiny leak won't.
