You don't get anything from your music being played on the radio?

We can't even play or perform a Lennon/McCartney tune in public without permission.

We can't even import Beatles sheet music.

Yes, I do.

Commercially available music is "released to radio" for exactly such purposes. Radio stations' playlists (as well as satellite radio, internet radio, cable and satellite TV, even bars/nightclubs who have DJs, jukeboxes, etc.) are surveyed by ASCAP, BMI, and other smaller organizations whose purpose is to collect royalties for these broadcasts, and to distribute such royalties to the songwriters and musicians who are entitled to them.

My music was sent to radio stations, specifically in hopes that they WOULD "market" it for me. I am paid for each individual broadcast of any song for which I am listed as a writer or performer.

Such is the case with all of the music they play. This is VERY different from file-sharing and piracy.

So is rhapsody like radio or is it file sharing/piracy?

Didn't I already answer that?...

Rhapsody is a subscription-based service. They pay the appropriate royalties to the artists. They are legit.

Having been a subscriber to XM radio for about three years now I can say that I've discovered and bought music written by artists I would never have found without the service. Thing is, without the commercialism driving what the DJs play, they're able to play just good music. I listen, like it, and buy it.

I'll never go back to regular radio again!
