Thinking about a 500 SEC

Their is a 500 SEC in my town for sale. The car has 150k on it. I have always thought that it was a nice looking car. It has the euro bumpers, lights, and has had the top portion of the engene rebuilt. As I recall it might even have the AMG body kit...not shure, I talked to the owner who is out of town for the winter, and found out that the car has been well maintained, but there is a smalll problem with the clear coat on the rear pillar. He want't $7900 for it. It's a nice car but it sounds like it needs a few things to be ideal. It sounds like it is a great car except for the paint. I like the car, but I would be worried about the fact that I might be over paying considering that It will probably need a new paint job. Thanks for any information.

Those are beautiful cars, but I think that is extremely steep, especially considering the modifications. I would seriously think about it before taking the plunge. $7900. should purchase a perfect, low mile example of one of these.

I think you should be able to find a well kept, original model for a little less than that if you shop around.

Also, I would be certain that it actually has 150K. That seems like such low miles to require a engine (even the upper part) rebuild.

Personally, I think you would be overpaying a great deal, but I am not sure what these cars typically go for in your area.

Check e-bay and your local newspapers first and see that they are selling for.

Good luck.

$7900 is a little more than normal... but not what I would call steep. Obviously the seller starts high with the price and will come down with negotiating. He might want around $6500. However there are 2 things that you need to consider. 1) its a Euro. Euro cars although have more power don't bring as much $ as US versions. 2) The clear coat problem also detracts value.. An example with half the mileage and a condition that matches the mileage would sell for around $15000. An AMG kit would add a couple of grand more.

A possibility for the 150k mile rebuild is timing chain. The need to be checked/replace around the 100k mark or 10 years.

You can buy a beater SEC in the price range of $5000 and less.

For that kind of money you can find an 400E/E420, get better mpg, less body roll, and it will be quicker.
