The driving test is a joke, at least over here but I doubt it's any different in other states. When I took it for the first and last time over 10 years ago I almost failed it because of one "mistake". While making a right turn on red after coming to a stop before the crosswalk as you're supposed to, I had to stop again in the middle of the crosswalk because there was traffic coming, traffic that was impossible to see from behind the crosswalk. The tester marked me down for stopping in the crosswalk. What was I supposed to do? Keep going and get hit? Or wait until the light turns green for which she probably would've marked me down too?

Instead of BS like this they should test real driving skills, like merging with traffic on a busy freeway. They should also have some winter-driving education because too many drivers seem to think that as long as you have a 4-wheel drive you'll be fine.

How can anyone fail a driving test at the DMV, that's almost impossible?!

Yup, I failed mine a week or so ago.

-I was driving a mini-van (my car didnt have insurence at the time) which there was no was going to fit in the parllel parking space - clearnce was mearly inches.

-When making turn at an intersection, if the road your turning onto has more than one lane, you MUST pick the lane closest to where your turning from (i.e. If your making a right, you HAVE to take the closest right lane) WHO DOES THAT?

-Your supposed to stop at yellow lights, even if the light JUST turned yellow.

So that was $45 I could have spent fixing up my car. The test was taken through a 3rd-party driving school, since the DMV/SOS in MI dont do roadtests.

I'm driving the Mercedes next time, all I have to do is a bit of brake work....

I wish that driving school in the US would be harder to weed out the potential accidents that occur on the road. Say that the DMV requires that a person must be able to drive a manual transmission vehicle and perform parallel parking with it. Lets see how many 16 year olds wuld get their liscence then.
When I went and did my test, I used an automatic late 90's Toyota Corolla. I did all the maneuverability one handed and with an automatic car and the small stature of it... it was essentially cheating.

I took mine (28 years ago) in my brothers VW Rabbit with auto trans. I'm thinking that was cheating big time. The space they had between the cones was so large I could have pulled in frontwards and parallel parked it.

I'm not sure about making the schools harder. But, I sure would like to see some rules about taking your kid to pass the test on his/her 16th or 17th birthday, and then stopping by the Ford dealer to get them a new 5.0 Mustang on the way home.

I've gotten a few flyers and such lately from USAA on the issue. They basically ask: "What the H*ll are you parents thinking?!"
My oldest is 9. She's getting a 1980 300D when she gets her OK to drive.

Even better, make the kid earn his or her own money to buy a car. The kid will appreciate the car and everything else in life a lot more. I didn't have my own car until I graduated from college at 23 and made enough money to buy it.

I've been driving on a permit/TIP for the past 2 1/2 years.

I bought the car with my own money, and pay for my own insurence.

SDL's are easy to park if you know how to drive. I park mine in a very crowded and busy parking garage all the time. Turning is easy as well.

Driving tests in this country are a freaken joke. I remember when I took mine I came to a 4 way stop at the same time as another car. Trying to be a nice guy I waved the guy to go first and the instructer marked it down! I mean come on. I can drive in this country half dead or if I jump the border and don't speak english, but if I waive someone on I lose points?

I would love for use to adopt a policy like Germany, weed out the idiots.

I couldn’t agree more.
However, she still gets my car when she’s old enough to drive it. As for her earning it, I figure she’ll have earned it ten times over by then. The car will be worth about 100.00 at age 32+ and a zillion miles. And she’s (and her little brother) certainly earned that much just changing the water pump on moms Dodge truck!
It's nice when they can easily fit where I can't.

Hand her a wrench, and she'll help tear into the FlingWing too.
