No freedom of culinary speech in Germany

Cannibal film banned in Germany

A German court has banned the screening of a film based on the case of self-confessed cannibal Armin Meiwes.

The state court in Kassel upheld a complaint from Meiwes, 44, against the film Rohtenburg, which was due for release in Germany on 9 March.

The court ruled that Meiwes' rights as an individual outweighed artistic freedom and that he should not become the object of a horror film.

Meiwes, jailed for eight-and-a-half years in 2004, is facing a retrial.

He admitted that in March 2001 he killed a 43-year-old man and partially ate him. He was jailed for manslaughter.

Meiwes says he simply carried out a willing victim's instructions.

But last year, an appeal court ordered a retrial after state prosecutors argued Meiwes was guilty of murder.

If found guilty, Meiwes could face a life sentence.

Meiwes, a computer technician, killed and ate Bernd Juergen Brandes after posting an advert on the internet asking for a willing victim in 2001.

The film Rohtenburg, directed by Martin Weisz, stars Thomas Kretschmann in the leading role.

Any body notice the double jeopardy issue here? Guess we take more than just free speech for granted ('cept for those of you who just hate everything American).

Considering there's still a substantial though small neo-nazi movement in Europe, it's understandable why governments there try to keep it suppressed by having tough restrictions on free speech relating to nazism. Try going public here in the US and referring to black people with the N word, then watch how quickly all TV stations will pull you off the air, how you may be prosecuted for hate speech, or even how quickly someone will put a bullet through your head.

Every day I get up at the crack of noon, put on my welders mask and deny that the sun came up... because I believe it, does this mean a return to the 'dark ages'?

With Draconian laws like that, it's a wonder the radical Muslims/etc in Germany are not his cell mates. I seem to remember Hamas death threats to an Israeli state. ...and yet here they are in Moscow as political guests !...and an (ex ? ) Taliban in Yale ?

I think that 'hate speech' is a catalist to suseptable people and if you find what you are about to say, offensive if it was about you, then keep your mouth shut......but hey....I guess that would be an idealistic world.

Not true. There are still KKK rallies thruout the South, sometimes held in the middle of town. Interesting to watch yet sickening at the same time.

Do you they go through black neighborhoods too? I know KKK rallies exist, but they are pretty rare, at least they don't make the news very often. I'd like to see what happens when they stage one in places like New Orleans, Atlanta or east L.A.

Ok how about being a public Al-Qaida sympathizer. Do you think our government will respect your freedom of speech? While freedom of speech is wonderful, there ought to be reasonable restrictions on it. I don't want it to be legal for people to shout on an airplane that they have a bomb in their baggage. Similarly, I don't want people to spread nazi or racial propaganda which can do great harm. Denying the halocaust is just plain stupid. The evidence that it happened is pretty overwhelming.

OK. If you draw a line then you don't really have freedom of speech. Can't have it both ways. Who judges what is reasonable?

Shouting "Fire" in a crowd or "Bomb" in a plane is different than the idea of nazism or stuff like that. One can create a panic while the other probably won't. So what you are saying is that freedom of speech only works when you agree with the idea being put forth and not when you feel the idea is bad, right? IMO, freedom of speech is for ideas and on your own time. IOW, I cannot be using company time to tell people about the latest presidential candidate unless that is my job. Similarly, if I want to allow people to have their MLK parade, I should support the right for people to have their KKK rally irrespective of whether I agree with either, both or neither.

What do you think of that British imam who was holding prayer sessions in the public calling for murdering all non-muslims? I have nothing against freedom of speech as long as it doesn't lead to panic or crime. Given that a lot of people are easily brainwashed, I think it's reasonable to have laws against hate speech.

I've only come up with one simple and elegent solution to an issue in my life and this is the issue. These asshats always like to march where they will cause a stir. Nazis in the Jewish neighborhoods like Skokie, KKK in any random black neighborhood. Here's the solution.

No police protection.

You want to march in Compton? Let us know how that turns out.

In fact if you want to go one step further, as our republican overlords have shown us, you can regulate time place and manner of political demonstrations. Think "protesters square" miles away from the republican convention in NY.

The Klan wants to protest in Long Island? Here's your permit for your protest in Hells Kitchen, knock yourself out. Oh, and the cops will be busy that day, have fun.

I say let him go for it. Of course, when someone wants to hold a rally to kill all muslims, let them go at it too.
