Largest Tree in Canada!

Hello fellow members. This weekend I was on the West Coast of Vancouver Island to re-measure our largest tree in Canada. It is a Western Red Cedar and it is 61'10" around and 194' tall (many dead tops but the tree is healthy). We then jumped into the Carmanah Valley to measure some off trail Sitka Spruce. It was nice to be in the forest for a break. Cheers!

I have seen some of the giants in Washington and Oregon as well. Next time I will see the Redwoods and Sequoias when I have some more time. I have worked with people who have measured the largest of these species and they are truly awesome.

How the heck did you measure it's height? Did you have a 195' tall ladder?

I used a clinometer but the official measurement was done with a laser. You stand away from the tree, hit the laser on the trunk (anywhere), click, then hit the bottom, click, then the top, click, and you have the height. Foresters use them all the time. Really what mzsmbs said is correct. It's just geometry. One of our tallest trees (315' tall Sitka Spruce) was measured from a Helicopter and a plumb line that was dropped from the tip. This tree has now lost its top so a 310' tall Douglas Fir is now the height champ. I know there are taller ones and am currently looking for them.....

mzsmbs, I love those Tulip trees. It's too bad the tree is now dead. Back in the old days, there were much larger Tulip trees but most are gone. Thanks for the pics. It is really one of the true giants of the east coast along with Eastern White Pine, Bald Cyprus trees of the south, and the beautiful Sycamore Trees.

sorry to hijack your thread like that. it's the american way.. j/k

yeah, i am glad i had the experience with the poplar. the coolest thing is the hike to it... you're walking through a forest, most trees are maybe 80y/o at most and then you turn a "corner" and whala! there it is..

speaking of Sycamores.. there is a HUGE one in Simsbury, CT. i don't think i have a pic of it though.. but here is one on the web --> Gifford Pinchot Sycamore

No we went in an 85 Suburban that seated 7 people. Five of us went. If you are serious and not just being funny, I don't want to turn this into a pro or anti logging thread. A small bit about me, I am not anti logging. I have friends in the industry and I love wood products. I am a conservationalist. I am a memeber of the Big Tree Committe for British Columbia. I believe in sustainable resources and truly special places. Please, enjoy the pics. Cheers!

No worries mzsmbs. Make it a big tree thread. I love to see the pics of all types of giant trees. Keep em coming!
Chris (Zeus), you are very welcome
