VEE-DUB Question...

I had to take the G/F's car to the gas station to put air in her spare tire, as it was flat. She has a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T. After driving her car, I hella like the little 1.8 motor. That thing hella pulls once it hits 2000 RPM. I am rethinking my whole idea of what car to buy now. You can seriously burn the tires on that car by just flooring it with the traction control off. I am not talking about E55 speed, but for its size, it is quick.

Any of you like the VW, or have any expieriences to share? They arent that expensive, but they are still a bit pricey. They are also cheap to mod, as they have many aftermarket makers. Oh yes, they do get hella good mileage.

Its a quick little car. Its got hella decent power, and is pretty easy on gas.

It is cool, because I can shut the traction control off and burn the tire by floorin it in first gear. It is dry too!

My wife had a 2000 Beetle 1.8 turbo. Fast little car, great drivetrain, but that car had electrical gremlins from day one...instrument cluster was replaced twice, right door window regulator broke when the car was 2 weeks old, spoiler on the tailgate never did work right, after repeated visits to the dealer. Nothing that kept it from starting in the morning, but annoying nonetheless.

I thought they were pretty zippy cars till I drove the 05 Mustangs with the V6. Havent even driven the V8 one yet and I think its fast.

I wouldn't really trust a VW without a warranty.

Though not an apple-to-apple comparison and therfore not completely germane to your question . . . my eldest son has a VW GTI VR6 which he bought new. The 1.8T is probably the more sought after engine since there were parts instantly available for getting more power from them than the VR6. Both will, as you wrote, spin the tires using just the throttle. The problem areas with these cars seem to be many. The aforementioned electrical issues have been real on my son's vehicle. Additionally, electric window breakage calling for trips to the dealship with the window dropped down inside of the doors. E-brake issues where the response is don't use the e-brake. I for one, feel that they are put on cars for a purpose and if the situation warrants using the e-brake you should be able to w/o fearing it will drag afterwards. In comparison to the other six vehicles in the yard the VW is right with the other european vehicles when it comes to quirky problems. The Toyotas require nothing except basic care while the two MBs and two VWs keep me busy. The MBs and the old VW bus are fun to work on and the VW GTI VR6 is a pain in the a$$.

The quirky electrical stuff aside, the 1.8T is great, and the 2.0T is even better. Chips are $300-500 bucks and you can get 200hp out of the 1.8T and 240hp out of the 2.0T. I'd wait a while for a nice used 2.0T Golf and chip it.

I have owned 4 water cooled VW's since 1991 - an '88 Jetta, a '96 Jetta GLS and I currently own a '00 Golf 2.0 GLS and an '01 GTI GLX VR6. On a cost per mile basis they have been the best cars I've ever owned. I have had a few problems, but one thing has been universally true with all of them - they have been easy to work on and don't cost an arm and a leg to fix. Also, a software package called VAG-COM is available from Ross-Tech in PA. It can read anything on the car. It is virtually the same as the VW dealer diagnostic software, and is in fact recommended in the Owner's Manual. In my opinion, the problems have been way over hyped.

Yeah, same with Audi, and they happen when the body control module (or whatever they call it) gets wet or goes bad.

vee dub!!!

These are good little cars. Before I had gotten interested in MBZ I use to mess around with convertable rabbits. I had several, The last one I sold was a 1980, Red, black top/interrior. It had a 2.0 engine/4 speed. It was fast and fun, A real head turner. As with all VW's it had "electrical bugs", YEAH, BUGGED THE HELL OUT OF ME!!! I sold it for $4500. to help with the purchase of my home, But all in all, I would have another, OR SEVERAL!!!

Its a parking brake too, use it whenever you park... Less chance of the linkage rusting up, causing it to drag after you use it. That'd be a bummer too, to need the brake, and have it continue to brake after you pop it.

Using the parking brake everyday also makes it alot harder to steal a FWD car too
