OK, Be Honest

Who likes Hamburger Helper?

The stuff's been around for ages, somebody is buying it?

Used to eat in in college because I was poor and with some ground beef, it would last a real long time. Since then, I haven't eaten it - what does that tell you?

Same's true for Spam - never had it, don't know anyone who eats it, but it's still around.

My most beloved wretched college fare was fish sticks and catsup, as I recall. I'd still eat that before Hamburger Helper.

I eat it, Roni also. Shoot, I like me some Ramen noodles too.

Ya'll were some spoiled college brats, had all that money for hamburger and helper.

I'd get a big sack of potatos when I was flat. Boiled potatos, mashed potatos, baked potatoes, fried potatos, I'd live off a twenty pound sack for a month. That and Krishna food. Love them Krishnas.

It tells me that it's a good thing they didn't call it "Armadillo Helper"!

I ate it in college too, along with a nutritional diet of pizza, corn dogs and beer!

Shoot, I still eat Helper, and Rice-a-roni and SPAM. When it comes to ramen style noodles I do step up a notch, none of that $0.25 a pack stuff, I jump big, $0.60 for the real thing - Sapporo Ichiban, Japan's #1 soup. Good stuff Maynard.

Broke college days, well then it was plain white rice, with salt and pepper, maybe with gravy when I was feeling rich. Cheap eats there. Still like rice too, have it a couple three to four times a week as my side.

You talking about the Temple over at 14th and Cherry?

no this was in Gainesville, home of the NCAA national basketball champions.

They used to go out to the quad every day for lunch and then do a big feast on the weekend.

I've endured many a conversion attempt for the sake of a plate of sticky sweet rice and beans or a slice of pizza.

Having started this thread I should add, I have cooked it in moments of desperation, when the wife was away. The cheese sauce was something out of a science lab. And don't read the side panel info. It could wreck your appetite!

I've had Hamburger Helper twice in my life...my mother despised it and wouldn't be caught dead using it...so once at a friend's house when I was very young and once again a couple of years ago...it is amazing what is still for sale in our super markets. As for Ramen...oh baby I love the 10c beef soups...I will not eat the chicken...I cook it so the noodles are still really firm. My mother and father recall Spam with great distatste so I never bothered to try it...and my father being the crazy south Philly guy he is still eats scrapple.

I have learned to be a halfway decent cook despite my upbringing. I think the education system could have done me a great service by encouraging me to take Home Economics in addition to Shop classes.
