Should I register my car? or do a non-opp

I live in California and my registration is due in June, but I'm moving to England in September and will be back next June. This means that I'll only be in the state four months out of the registration year. Since I'm cheap I'm thinking of just filling a non-opp and risking driving with it.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the penalties for this and anything about temporary monthly registration.

You can get a "TEMP OPERATION" permit. They give them out for about a two month span. I got one when my car would not pass smog.

However, I think your best bet would to just pay the fee and reregister it as to avoid any complications next year when you try to re register it.

Does this mean you are driving without insurance? You shouldn't do that...

I do have insurance, I just don't feel that I should have to pay for a full years registration when my car will not be on the road for 8 months of it.

I guess it works differently in the United States...in British Columbia, Canada, a vehicle can only be insured if it is registered...they go together...they do have temporary insurance/registration for people who are preparing to move out of the province and other scenarios...maybe you have something similar to this...

Yep and every one of them should have their tags yanked. You can also bet that if you do have any assets and no insurance, and you hit me I will sue for damages. I don't care if its a $1k fender bender, see yay in court.

Anyway at least in CT the DMV is a nightmare, I try and limit my interaction with them as much as possible. I'd just pay the full year to avoid the pita hassal that dealing with the DMV causes.

I only drive the SDL 6 months out of the year and pay to register it for 12, cost of doing business as they say.

This goes right back to (someone elses) the idea of adding insurance to gas prices.

For what it is worth I have insurance on my MB that hasn't been plated since '84

how much is your registration?

a PNO is going to be $15 minimum. if the reg is less than $100 i say why bother, pay it and be done.

otherwise you can get a temporary (2 months) registration sticker on your car. but they dont just give them out. you have to have paid up anyway.
