Your mentioning "risk life and limb, in order to fight for an ideal;" that can be a very good thing. Other times a very bad thing. The Nazis had their own ideal as did many other war criminals. Believing 'we're the good guys because we're us' is very common in the world. High self esteem can sometimes be a very dangerous thing.

Incidentally, I can introduce you to a few Vietnamese refugees who would differ withyour opinion about the Viet-Nam war. They would have liked to have seen the US keep the communist barbarians at bay.
