Kuan, I am sorry for your loses. Having photographed dead bodies and people with cancer during my career, you never take one day for granted. I recently did my will and want my "blast off/ funeral" to be a big party with a conga line, drinking and the movie "Blazzing Saddles" to be shown. Funerals are for the living, the dead don't care....

This thread reminds me, has anyone seen the recent film, The Three Burials of Melqiades Estrada? It's an engaging account of death and inter-ethnic friendship set in the west Texas and Mexican deserts starring Tommy Lee Jones.

5-10 thousand? I don't think that's a realistic range any longer unless it is what the family is choosing.
I am an embalmer/funeral director and I find it really rewarding. Difficult, but rewarding. I think sometimes the public has this image of morticians being a bunch of scum bags trying to con them out of their money, but thats not the case. I think it would be neat for a person to make a casket. I have considered making my own at some point. I notice with my families that it definitely seems to help with their grieving process when they do participate at least to some level in the funeral process. Quote:

I visited a Death and Dying class at school when they had a funeral director as a visiting speaker. I was surprised to learn that it is a legal requirement (federal I think) that the funeral home use any casket that is provided to them by the family. There was a good deal on Ebay at the time==old but elaborate wooden casket $300--never used.
Attended a funeral for a colleague last week. She died of lung cancer.

I hate to go to funerals. I'll be going to one soon, I'm afraid. I'm not looking forward to it.
When I die, I want there to be a big party with lots of drinking, laughing, the recitation of funny stories, memories, etc. Like Hunter S. Thompson, I have made it known that I'd like for my ashes to be shot up into the sky in a rocket or a Roman candle for the grand finale.

I want to be cremated, ashes put in Ben and Jerry's ice cream cartons and given out to to whomever "wants a piece of me." Then I want everyone to go to a cigar bar, drink and be merry knowing that I'm doing the Rhumba over the "Rainbow Bridge." Also, I want everyone to watch Blazzing Saddles.

I might just have my funeral BEFORE I die so I can come, too. Sounds like it will be a blast.
Literally.

I went to funeral in Virginia once where all the family members were crying hysterically loud. So loud and crazy my wife and I were freaked out. God, the guy was pretty old...

I didn't know Carleton was a Vikings fan. I figured he was partial to the Giants or the Jets.
