There are an awful lot of folks receiving chemo who attribute medicinal value to mj, and the things they say make a great deal of sense to this ex-user. Does the study you're referring to discount those effects?

BTW, the greatest success of marketing a drug that was assigned to a subsequently discovered 'disease' has got to be Ritalin. If you don't know the story, check it out -- absolutely jaw-dropping...

If pot has no medicinal value, why do they make it in pill form? Of course no one actually buys Marinol because you can get mo better weed from any 16 year old. Cheaper too.

But Bot's spot on. Prohibition was a constitutional amendment because they understood back in the day that the government had no right telling a person what they could consume.

Denver decriminalized it last year and as a practical matter it was kind of dumb. Used to be that you would get a municipal ticket with a $100 fine. No probation, no drug treatment. Pay your C note and be on your way. Now they prosecute under the state statue and you can get probation and drug treatment. But I like the symbolism.

I've heard glaucoma sufferers swear mj is the only thing that helps them. Apparently there's some research to back that up.

I have a neighbor that is a pretty conservative was a anti weed type until he got cancer. He said that weed and weed only takes away the Chemotherapy hangover.

I know another guy that is wealthy and healthy and likes to burn a fatty every now and then.

I don't think either of them should be criminals.

I don't smoke or drink (anymore) so maybe I shouldn't have much of a say but......

I think the "drug" that has the most harmful effects is alcohol. It's wide overuse and associated costs are incredibly detrimental to our society. Addiction to it causes people to do things they wouldn't normally do, the extremity of which I don't think you would see if they were high.

You don't often hear about someone who is stoned beating their wife and kids. Or, running their car at top speed into a busload of nuns.

I have no problem with pot being decriminalized but those doing it need to have some common sense. The vote here in Denver was one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. It is legal to smoke pot by city ordinance (I'm not familiar with the correct term) but not by state or national laws.

Maybe we should work from the top down potheads!

legalize, regulate and tax.

the worst thing about mj is that is is only sold by criminals who have a vested interest in moving you up to something more addictive.

kindof like the tobacco companies.

of course it will never happen. the drug cartels are no doubt funneling tons of money into unsuspecting fundamentalists campaign chests to be sure of it.

Marijuana being kept illegal represents another of the endless frauds committed by our government. Mood elevators are legal. Anti-depressants are legal. Anti-anxiety drugs and even some “happy” pills are legal. A drug does not have to contain any curative value to be of medical value. I’m surprised that many of you right wingers aren’t goose stepping along with uncle fed on keeping marijuana illegal! The very prospect hints at independent thought, which isn't often seen amongst conservatives. After all, marijuana is illegal because it serves as a tool to advance democracy (wink wink), at gunpoint when convenient. You conservatives love to find glory in that! And along those lines, how soon will Mexico and Canada be declared enemies of the USA for the bull **** WAR ON DRUGS, when the sole and exclusive purpose is the justification of throwing away of more of your and my tax dollars in several work projects for police and the military. The issue over keeping marijuana illegal is empty headed traditionalism at it’s best! Look at how much is spent on jail, on policing, on military intervention, on the court system, on the spraying of crops, on the bribing of foreign and local government officials…and all for what? The expansion of government control. Since about half of all kids don’t even graduate high school anyway, clearly there is no risk to the shining futures of anyone. We all are aware that efforts to stop the use of marijuana amount to little other than a very expensive toll bridge for the tax payers, and a toll bridge which leads to nowhere and which produces and protects nothing.

Oh, yeah, Marinol is used widely in hospice and cancer related facilities. Most docs that are afraid to prescribe it, are afraid because doing so can cost them their medical license....

So you see, stating that marijuana has no medical value, just like keeping it illegal are two more examples of the fraud that is conservative ideology in its entirely traditional posture. Good thing it provides relief for

Yeah, I did miss a little of it. A study on THC is not the same thing as a study on mj as you noted. One is relevant, the other isn't -- unless you're a big pharmaceutical company.

That is what was brillent about the Denver campaign, they pointed to the link between alcohol and domestic violence, DUI deaths, and all the other assorted nasties associated with booze.

It would be nice if you could pass this stuff top down but that will never happen. The FDA went to court to take the medical licences of any Dr. prescribing weed, and won, and here in CO it would get beaten by all the pinheads in Co Springs. Didn't pass in Denver by much.

This is sort of related: Years ago I saw a 60 minutes thing on terminal cancer patients using Heroin for pain control in a clinic in England. Everyone involved said - hey they're terminal, and heroin works better than anything else - and doesn't have the side effects of some less effective pain killers. I am not an advocate of legalizing heroin, but in this country you can't even get it by prescription. How screwed up is that?

I think the illegality of marijuana is complete garbage. It's less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes and if people want to smoke fatties and sit around and listen to the Bob Marley while playing video games, I really couldn't care less.

As for the FDA report that claims there's no evidence of medicinal value, there is certainly thousands of years' worth of anecdotal evidence that says otherwise. The fact that Marinol, a synthetic drug based on marijuana, exists also speaks volumes. And someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but no one can prove that aspirin works either, right? It still cures my headaches, though.

Just think about all the tax revenue that could be had if it were legalized. Instead, as someone else has already pointed out, that money goes to criminals. Some of them are small-time growers who may not be bad people on the whole, but according to the DOJ, Mexican drug gangs are also reaping huge profits.

I feel like we have out heads in the sand on this issue as a society.

Ironically, heroin was derived to reduce the addiction potential of morphine while increasing it's pain-killing effect.

When my grandfather was in his final months a doctor refused to prescribe a more powerful pain killer despite the fact that he was bed ridden and in hospice. He was quickly out ranked but the thought that a doctor will not prescribe something to someone that obviously needs it for reasons other than because the patient needs it blows me away.

Studies

I have heard somewhere that pot contains substances that may contribute to lung cancer just as much as cigarette smoke. Any of you scholars know of studies that would indicate or support that claim?

Personally, I think that legalizing it would reduce crime, be a source of, rather than a drain on government revenue, and possibly improve the quality of the product. I believe heroin in legal in Britain, isn't it? At least for heroin addicts. Anybody know for sure? If so, do you know how legalizing it affected British society?
