Thanks CMAC and Tom for the feedback. After due consideration combined with a very sore elbow, I’ve decided to go with pre drilling and screws rather than nails for the remainder of the project. The project has been the rebuild of an outside stairway and the railing is the remaining component to be completed.

Nah, treated and untreated pine. Only time I’ve used hardwood outside is long ago when helping my dad with boat related stuff. At that time teak was the material of choice, except for interior spaces, where oak was used almost exclusively.
