Ebay stinks

i just had an auction end, it was for a cell phone, i found out today that the phone was not able to be activated. so i figured i need to end the auction. since there were less than 11 hours, ebay wouldn't let me. said i had to just cancel the bids as they were placed. so i did that. BIG MISTAKE. i got tons of emails accusing me of cheating and being dishonest, and trying to keep the phone etc..
really upsets me that i tried to do the right thing and not cheat someone of over $300!! and get crap for it. what do you all think.

That sucks. I got a bunch of messages from pissed people saying that I upped the price of an auction a bunch. I had 14 bids. What pisses me off is that I was trying to outdo someone with a proxy bid on it! Damn idiots.

If you would like, I can outbid everyone for you!!!

(If you would like to sell it cheap, I would buy it! I have that exact phone with borken screen. )

Are you sure that there is no other alternative? Can you add any text to your description like IMPORTANT: I've discovered that the phone can't be activated!! I will cancel all bids, I apologize, do not bid, etc.

Well, it's just a tough situation all around to find out so late in the auction that there's a serious problem with an item.

The rules that made it tough for you to do what was by your lights "the right thing" are the same rules that make it harder for a bozo to pull an auction because it's not bringing the price he had hoped for.

As well-intentioned as they might have been, your actions were, to the bidders in the auction, indistinguishable from the actions of just such a bozo. Some of them reacted to that. Them's the breaks. See what you can learn from the experience, and move on.

As an occasional seller, I try diligently to make sure that situations such as that don't happen to me on eBay. If something like this were to happen to me, though, I think I'd just let the auction ride and then sort things out with the winning bidder.

Had a similar situation and seller paid immediately. I just refunded through pay-pal promptly and explained the product was damaged - and left the buyer positive feedback, who intern left me very good feedback (for being honest). stuff happens
The biggest heartburn I had with e-Bay was post Katrina. Ever tried to call e-Bay and talk to someone? I have auctions running, ending, Buy it Nows, best offers, etc. No way to access the internet or even to ship things. I just wanted them to send an email to the buyers and give them the opportunity to opt out, cancel, whatever. No freakin way would they consider anything other than one of their general announcements of possible delays for sellers in the affected area. After 10 days you can imagine what kind of mail I had. 80% of the buyers were understanding - but there was the 20% the DGAF.

Well, you got a lot of dirty emails, but you DIDN'T get a bad feedback. Those are tough on a seller, more than on a buyer. I saw yesterday a seller who had Zero positive feedbacks and one negative, and he was selling a car!! And there were bids on it. Unbelievable

You did what you had to do, so I would say it is OK, and glad to see that an honest person (you) did ok in ;the end and made out OK
