about anger....
Explosive rage not as rare as once thought
By Ronald Kotulak Chicago Tribune CHICAGO — One in 20 Americans may be susceptible to uncontrollable anger attacks in which they lash out in road rage, spousal abuse or other severe transgressions that are totally unjustified, researchers from Harvard and the University of Chicago have found. Their nationwide study found that the condition called intermittent explosive disorder, or IED, is not the rare occurrence that psychiatrists had previously thought. Four to five percent of people in the study were found to have physically assaulted someone, threatened bodily harm or destroyed property in a rage an average of five times a year. Intermittent explosive disorder is different from the common type of anger most people exhibit from time to time when they pout, throw a book down or walk out of a room, activities that are better described as mild temper tantrums. IED is defined as repeated and uncontrollable anger attacks that often become violent. "Our new study suggests IED is really out there and that a lot of people have it," said Dr. Emil Coccaro, the University of Chicago's chief of psychiatry. "That's the first step for the public to actually get treated for it, because if you don't think it's really a disorder, you're never going to get treated for it." This Harvard study does nothing more than make lame excuses for people's behavior. You can bet the defense lawyers are salivating over this. People that are "diagnosed" will probably be able to get on disability before long.
This is what happens when keeping up with the Jonses becomes the number one priority in your life. Consumerism is the root cause. |

A clinical term for no self-control, nice.
Is there a clinical term for being lazy? Because I have that. |

jesus holmes, i'm shaken. not used to thoughtful responses around here. i agree with you about consumerism, but would take it a step further, many of us are awakening to the fact that the american dream is not only dead but has been transformed into a friggin nightmare. most people on realizing this are left frightened and insecure the resulting episodes of rage are understandable. orwell was right he just picked the wrong year.

Consumerism probably plays a role in anger issues, but I don’t think it is a root cause that according to the article 4% to 5% of folks have recurrent uncontrollable anger. But i'll admit the prospect brings added meaning to the term “shrink wrap.” I think one point of the article is to suggest that folks who have anger issues such threatening bodily harm, actually assaulting someone, and/or destroying property, and who have similar anger issues several times per year can and ought to seek help.
