I think it's the country that gave us vampires (see cmac2012's avatar). Other than the female gymnasts, I just don't see the appeal...

Hey thanks for them links jim, i checked a couple out between the internet working and not working. Pretty interesting stuff. As was the video, d-zel. I have seen a few others from another site aimed at realing in tourists, they did some nice helicopter shots of a little of everything. I am going to get a book on the language tomorrow if my town has one.

The good ole boy and redneck deal, I been around a lot of both. From a small Utah town, to Bakersfield, and a township above it. Worked for a good ole boy manager and a redneck supervisor at the Chevy dealer.

Romania . . .

The language, as someone mentioned, is Romance-based, but from what I have read, there is a strong admixture of Slavic words that makes for some differences between Romanian and, say, Italian. I don't know how tough it is to learn, or if it's easier if you've studied Latin or one of the other Romance tongues.

Personally I'd say go for it. I hear the young women in the Eastern European countries tend to the nice (and nice-looking) side.

My input is that if you've never lived in a foreign country before, you ought to "dip your foot in the water" first before you take the plunge.

It's a helluva culture shock living in a foreign country, and my guess is you'll either end up shooting yourself in the head with a revolver, or moving back home within a year.

Consider Mexico. Many Mexicans speak english and you can get home easily (provide you're not in jail) if you don't like it. I lived there (Queretaro) for a year and had a great time.
regards,
Mark

Have you checked with the Romanian Gumm'int about this idea? Most countries have severe restrictions about furriners moving in and settling down. Not like the Untied States, where you can just waltz in across the border and demand your "rights".

What?!? Vampires? I don't get it. That's Kazantzakis the writer and he's Greek. A kindly and wisened looking old chap, wouldn't you say?

If you don't behave I'm going to tell what Vlad the Impaler really did and it'll take your mind, however temporarily, into some fetid pools.

If you read his posts, he IS checking it out, from as many sources as possible,
and we are trying to help him, and he has mentioned here that he's thinking about possibly doing it as a vacation, as the first step, that seems to be pretty clever and a good way to go about it if you ask me.

He has the pioneer spirit, and that is super. Who knows, it could be a wonderful experience

More than once

You should probably go more than once at different times of the year to see if you can live with it in the different seasons of the year. My hot's off to you. I haven't traveled that much and get kind of spooked thinking about being in other countries. I guess I'm sort of like the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings, don't like to leave the Shire.

Good luck, Bilbo

Thanks for the support guys. I got a book, they didnt have the CD accompaniment, i'll have to order or check out the library, but so far is doesnt look too hard, i got a year of french and a year of spanish under my belt! I dont mind any weather but real hot, so that shouldnt be a problem. I do want to go in warm weather to the beach on the black sea, pictures look really fascinating so far, like going to the ocean but a sort of dark hue over everything, very cool, and again in the winter times to take full advantage of the snow. Theres a pretty good site with gov. info regarding immigration, its still a way off, but the gist is that i have to prove myself for 6 years until they welcome me as "permanent", unless I marry, if i understood it correctly. Maybe I can demand welfare and claim 12 kids, then sue some farmer for disriminating against me. just kidding. I can even take my car with me.
