The owner must be on some good drugs. EBay should remove it as a scam.

Unfortunately it's all too easy for someone to set up a bogus, one trick pony account just to bait the eager ignorant and then disappear.

I saw the zero feedback. And what was up with that "279 miles" bit? Amazing that $50K was not enough for him.

Now he's baiting La canaille with a Pontiac convertible with "dealer installed Hurst 3 speed manual?"just looks like garden variety 3 on the tree.

Hurst "dealer installed"3 speed manual?G.M. guys, help me out here!

I can't figure the high bids the guy's getting in spite of the "0" feedback. Maybe the guy's got some shill action going on.

t walgamuth 06-24-2006 04:24 PM

pretty sure that that is the case.

imho

Could some of the bidders be shills? Of course they could.

Could all of them be shills? I'm not inclined to think so.

As despicable as I consider shill bidding to be, it can't make a "real" bidder pay more than he was willing to pay for something.

t walgamuth 06-24-2006 06:20 PM

looking at the car and from the sound of the lying seller, i wouldnt be surprised if they all are shills.

is there some technical reason they cant all be fake?

I don't know of a technical reason that they can't all be fake. However, to think that such is the case seems, to me at least, to be unnecessarily complicating things.

Look at the top two bidders. Then look at their feedback pages. From there, look at those auctions (the ones they've won) that are still accessible in the eBay system.

Using the "Items by Bidder" option in the eBay advanced search, look at the recent auctions in which those bidders participated.

Just how much work would it be to generate such detailed "legends" for two such "fake" bidders? And the motive for doing so would be...?

t walgamuth 06-24-2006 08:21 PM

to sell a lousy car for over $50,000?

Carleton Hughes 06-24-2006 08:40 PM

Well now, as I said, anyone with a credit card{and anyone today can get one!}can open an ebay account.

The rest i leave to your imagination and experience.

Are you serious here? Do you really think it's likely that someone would build such intricate "legends" as the top two bidders in that auction - to be shills - in the hopes that a real, live bidder would be hooked by this auction?

Of course one can easily open an eBay account, Carleton. It's not a very exclusive club (couldn't be; they let me in).

I would never suggest that posession of an eBay account, in and of itself, lends any particular credibility to the holder. To do so would require naivete much greater than mine.

I googled the seller's name palmbeachexotics. There is a web site with that name. My internet security settings won't go there. ???
