The owner was a perfectionist and owns what looked to me like a fabrication company of some sort. His foreman took care of the boat and had made a fitting for the raw water intake so he could crank the boat once a month. The motor is pristine. Don't know about the stuffing box, but the shaft spins true. Feather prop that doesn't have a nick in it. Running/standing in good shape, but I would probably update the blocks and winches. The sails have always been inside air conditioned and are fine. I don't think the spinnacker was ever used because the pole was in the warehouse on a shelf. New lines would be a given and the teak needs to be re-done. The cabin sole doesn't fit perfectly, but the interior is otherwise pristine. Some new salon bench cusions and it would look fine. The electrical all works:eek: but I will re-wire the mast before I re-step it. There is no 'spider webbing' around any chain plate or other deck fitting. No blisters and new bottom paint.

This is not a Hunter, McGregor or the like. A Van der Stadt won the Sydney--Hobart race last year. I saw a '90 29' on the net yesterday for $34K. I would say it is more in line with a Cape Dory, Alden or a british channel cutter. I could flip it for 10-12K on the East Coast.

HeHe, I did that. Our O'Day was on craigslist for a stupid cheap price. I sent an email saying "I'll take it, when can I pick it up." When we got there everything went smooth until the seller said "good thing you said you'd take it, we got offers from all over the country" I got the look:mad:

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. :D

Wife won't be mad, but I just bought a new hunting boat in the winter, so I don't want to push it. I have a friend to split the slip with, so that shouldn't be a big deal either.

I got an Island Piglet 38' chartered for 3 days next week, so that ought to get her interested. I could have borrowed a 50' Tanyan off a friend that was super lux for free, but I don't want her to be too dissapointed when she sees ours:D

But you know you won't - sounds like you did real well. If it's the hull I'm seeing on the net with a cut-away keel, it looks as if it'll have a great motion - as long as it's not backing down.

Yeah, the rudder is fully protected. Shouldn't be a problem to use bunjie cords as autohelm:D It has a slightly bulbous keel and is about 1000 pounds, I think. Real long and not narrow at the bottom. Where are you seeing it on the net? I haven't found the exact model anywhere.

If you were smart you'd sell that dielsel auto of yours so would afford to buy and maintain that boat. Probably would get much for that old car.

Here's the link

Thanks. I did find that ad, but that isn't the boat. The cabin roof on mine isn't as angular, and has that domed '70s look. Also, the deck isn't teaked but is glass. The interior looks similar though. This one was actually built in the Netherlands and has the yard plate mounted underneath the tiller.

I was just thinking more about the lines of the hull and keel shape. That guy is sure proud of the boat he built ( as I guess anybody would be) but glassed in wood and filling cavities with foam? Big problems.

We just sold “Analogue”our Lapworth L-40 and I'm boatless for the first time in 19yrs. , so I'm a little obsessed, or empty feeling. My daughter just bought a place on the water in Galveston to complicate my longings. My plan was to move the dock side of life from LA harbor to San Carlos,SA, but until I started reading your post I'd just sort of put it out of my head. I don't know weather to say thanks or damn – but now I got the bug.

:D Well, let me put a nail in your coffin by suggesting you go pick up a copy of one of Tristan Jones' books.

Actually his stuff makes me want to stay tied up at the dock or just enjoy the night sky where I'm at. There used to be a crusty old guy down at the docks that actually lived on a little Folkboat. He always made me think of those tales. LA Harbor's no yacht club. Lot's of great old classics, and a great place to live aboard, but your neighbor may be seriously salty.

Ya, I know what you mean. I was reminded by a sailing friend that Jones died a pauper and double amputee primarily due to his diabetes being exacerbated by alcoholism.

One of the coolest guys I ever met that lived the lifestyle was a tenant of mine when I ran a marina in VA. In the late 80s, he had turned some family land in Colorado into a (small) ski resort, using his own equipment. He sold everything and took off. When I knew him he was about 65. He was at my marina for about 6 months, trying to earn enough money delivering boats to the Carribean, to drop a new Yanmar into his old wooden Alden so he could take off again. I went to the Annapolis Boat Show with him to pick up the engine and he had casually mentioned that his boat partner was going to meet us there. Now this guy wore flannel shirts all Summer and was always quite dirty, but you could tell he originated from a family of means. She was about 40 and was doing modelling gigs to build up her cruising fund:D

No $4k for a diesel sailboat in that size range is a good price. Catalina had a few diesel 27's but this sounds like a different type of boat. Unfortinitly its a Saab diesel. You name the oddball part I can get it but I have no idea where to get parts for a Saab diesel. So if you want to cruise or just get parts you may end up repowering.

Sounds like a Euro boat, so hopefully they used a standard winch like Lewmar or something along those lines. Euro boats lover oddball crap by US standards, Volvo shaft seals for example, what a PITA to get. Why not use a regular flax stuffing box?

I'd replace the standing rigging with some good rod rigging, and the life lines. You can update all the control lines as well. I'd be thinking some 3/8 NE Reg braid or Sta Set for the sheets, and control lines. Some Sta Set X Plus 10mm or smaller for the halyards, or T900 maybe. Rags are rags but you can get away with old sails for awhile. Heck I race against guys with brand new sails every weekend and we do pretty well on the shot practice set. But still rags are rags, a nice new set of North Sails would probably wake her up.

As with any old boat $4k is just the down payment. Throw another $10k into it and you may have something.
