Sounds like a Euro boat, so hopefully they used a standard winch like Lewmar or something along those lines. Euro boats lover oddball crap by US standards, Volvo shaft seals for example, what a PITA to get. Why not use a regular flax stuffing box?

I'd replace the standing rigging with some good rod rigging, and the life lines. You can update all the control lines as well. I'd be thinking some 3/8 NE Reg braid or Sta Set for the sheets, and control lines. Some Sta Set X Plus 10mm or smaller for the halyards, or T900 maybe. Rags are rags but you can get away with old sails for awhile. Heck I race against guys with brand new sails every weekend and we do pretty well on the shot practice set. But still rags are rags, a nice new set of North Sails would probably wake her up.

As with any old boat $4k is just the down payment. Throw another $10k into it and you may have something.
The very first post mentioned it was a Euro boat. Don't worry Hatt, I worked in a boatyard when I was young too, was a harbor master for my first year out of college and have owned sailboats for 20 years. I was a partner in a Sobstad loft when I was in college and still have the connection to basically cut my own rags. Saab diesel parts are easier to get than they are for Westerbeak--for me anyway.

Edit: keep in mind too, this is just an impulse purchase--not my lifelong dream. I will probably keep it for a year and decide whether or not to get into a big boat again depending on how the wife takes to it.

I used to like sailing little boats but once you cruise @ 9-10 knots with a A/C, washer/dryer and a microwave the dinky boats lose their appeal. Much like small boobies.

I had a 41' Morgan OI Ketch (pos) that was rigged out pretty good like that, but as you know, moved from the coast. And that Moorings would seem cramped compared to the 54' Garlington pops had

Where does one get Saab diesel parts? I could use a connection I get some oddball stuff through the yard. One engine I think its called a Marstyll(sp?) you have to call the factory in the Netherlands to get anything.

Small boats are fun Jeff, sail a Star in 30 knots and tell me its boring. Heck at 30 knots usually I am not in the boat. I spend most of the time on the side.

But yeah I am partial to large boats, just can't afford that Swan I really like yet.

Sobstad makes some nice sails(used them a bit, won a bit with them) Still I prefer North.

Jeff I know you like Tiara's, I was standing in a 1992 31 today. The aft cockpit meet the saw in order to extract the tanks. The exhuast wasn't properly attached to the mufflers or engines, it fell off when it was moved! About 5/8 of an inch of the hose was bitting the muffer on one side!

Very nice boat, I was a bit disapointed with the exhuast and the way they sealed the deck.

Very nice boats. This one has a tower and a pair of Cummins.

The decks are foam cored and they did a textbook job of mounting the tanks. The only reason they went bad so soon is because the hatch's above were leaking down onto them and the water was sitting. Tiara did an excellent job of keeing them out of the bilge water.

I have a friend that owns a marina at Solomons Island, MD. His place is very popular with European transients so he has all the connections lined up. You know there are broker services (just like for grey market cars) that will handle getting the parts for you, and they speak the languages. When I ran the place in VA, if my yard needed something special, he could always get it. Also, I am close enough to Annapolis to go there if I need to--you can get any part for any boat in Annapolis (or to be fair, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale).

One of my good pals owns the North loft in Charleston, SC. He made a Whitbread campaign when he was 30. Loyalty to a cloth is nowhere near as important as the stitching and cuts, as you probably know.

Does your friend do mail order business? Like could I call him looking for an odd part for a Mercedes, Saab, Renult ect engine and he can get it?

If so do you mind sending me his contact info? I order hundreds of thousands worth of stuff throughout the year, I can always use another good contact.

I will check with him next week when I sail up there, but I doubt it. He owns the marina and a railway for fun, not for profit. The way I met him, is he had a 46' Nauticat motorsailor (heavy duty--full pilot house, ect...Maine boat). He came to stay at my marina one weekend and the compressor on his fridge went out. He had a handicapped child, that also had severe diabetes. I put her medicine in the ship's store in the beer cooler, gave him a key and run of the place, and drove to richmond myself to pick up a new compressor, and had my guys install it for free. I have kept up with him for 13 years now, and if I bareboat, I always cruise up there and spend the night on him at Solomons (i also bring him a bushel of softcrabs and a bunch of booze). I will let you know.
