Cut and Run
In the SF Chron letters section, June 26:
'Cut and run' Editor -- The same gang of marketeers who demonized the word "liberal'' are now trying to portray the expression "cut and run'' as meaning cowardice. If you're walking down a dark alley and see a gang of thugs coming toward you, the intelligent thing to do is cut and run. If you're playing stud poker and you're clearly beat regardless of how much money you've put in the pot, the intelligent person "cuts'' his losses and "runs.'' If you're in a relationship that has gone sour, the intelligent person cuts and runs. Those who would "bravely'' confront the thugs, throw good money after bad and continue to invest in an unhappy relationship are not so intelligent. It's a shame how these Rovian purveyors of newspeak are perverting the English language they claim to love so much. DAVE WILCOX Walnut Creek
