Hi,
I found a nice 1999 S600.I am interested in selling my 1998 S500,as many of you know.I am going to get a final price from the dealership in a little while,and depending on there price I may drop the price of my S500.I heard a rumor that...
1.There were only about 97 1999 S600's made
2.That these cars had a hand-built engine

I doubt that there were 99 made in 1999. I think the 99 made refers to the "Grand Edition". That is the vely last production cars that Mercedes makes in the line. For instance, the last 500 ML500's with the W163 chassis were Grand Editions. They are supposidely built to the highest and finest standards of any car.

And yes, the V12 was handbuilt. It was in the Car and Driver when the tested the last run SL600 silver arrow. All of the M120 V12's were handbuild AFAIK.

Actualy if its really a 1999, I think there were only 14 or so 1999 S600's imported to this country.

Check over at MBworld, those guys seem to have the import stats at hand.

What did your auction end at?

If it is a 12 cyl., good luck getting it serviced. There's been a recent resurrection of an old S600 thread on the tech forum.

If you haven't written the check yet, find and read this thread first. If you have, I hope there's plenty of dinero in the piggy.

Hey, hey, hey... The 600s arent bad. Just regular maintainence, and they arent much more to maintain than the old 300TE I drive.

My auction on the S500 ended at around $7,000.The others seem to go for like $15,000.One that went for 15,the dealership changed the auction to a private auction.I think that they may be bidding on there own car.Also,I say an ad for a 1998 S500 on ebay too.The car was in New Orleans,but was not affected by Hurricane Katrina.It had 105,000 miles and no accidents.The carfax report showed 32 records (I didnt pay for the full report,just the free record check)and when you type my S500's VIN number in,you only get 8 records.So,I may drop the price of my car to the actual blue book value.I was about 3 grand over blue book.

By the way:The Grand Editions were only made with the 1999 S500's.Ive seen many Grand Editions,no Grand Edition matches the feeling of driving a 600.

Don't let people scare you away from the M120. They are not that bad, think of it as having two M104 I6's under the hood.

Yeah the S600 is a completly different animal then other models.

Any S600 is scary fast. Whether it be the M120 found in the W140 or the new Twin Turbo V12 found in the W220, they are all fast. The cool thing is the passing power of the 12. I have it in an SL, and that is a sickly fast auto. In a sedan, it has to be a winning combo.

I have ridden in a W140 but never driven one... Many people have told me it is fairly nimble for its huge size... Is this true?

Yep, drives like a car half its size. MB is very good at making there modern sedans drive and handle like cars half there size.
