horse question

yesterday when i saw those wild horses i got to thinking. they look like those little horses the mongolians still ride. does anybody know if they may be genetically the same?

i seem to remember that they have one less vertibra in their backgiving them their short bodied look.

it seems plausable that they may have migrated along with the early people who came from northeast asia to north america.

i saw a program on pbs where a large american cowboy took his enormous western saddle and went over to mongolia (that may not be the right place) and put his saddle on their compact ponies. his feet looked like they might drag. but the little ponies carried him with ease and did all sorts of things with him on board.

horses are just so cool looking. i always marvel at how they will work for us when they could just refuse. dogs too. they just want to help.

On the East Coast, there are a couple of barrier islands that have and auction off, wild horses. The story on them is that Spanish Conquistadors brought them over to Mexico and later up through florida, ect... and they made it out to the Coast of VA. I don't know about the western horses, but have read a little about the mastadons and other animals coming over the Asian landbridge of Alaska. My guess is they came up from Mexico, though, without google's assistance

Oh, I forgot, if you have a achance, the Bureau of Land Management website has all that stuff on there, as they are the ones that round up themustangs and auction them. I ijust don't remember what it says.

they look pretty small to be spanish descendants.

yeah, that is what i always heard too but they sure look a lot like the mongolian horses.

many times what we have accepted as truth is just legend.

just thought i would ask, thinking there is someone out there who has a lot more knowlege of horses who might have access to the latest genetic information.

OK. Well, here's the general theory: horses originally evolved in North America as we know from the digs, but supposedly were not hear by the time Europeans arrived because of a catastrophic event. There is documentation that the Spaniards brought a lot of horses over and more recent evidence that the indians spread these horses over the country. BLM has spent a lot of money studying this issue and making it publicly available.

yeah, i see, you are the person with more knowlege right?

ok, sorry if i may have offended.

and now that i think about it i dont beleive the indians had horses at all til the spaniards came. but they adapted quickly.

but the wild horses sure look a lot like the mongolian horses. i suppose it could be just adaptation to climate and food supply. it may be pretty similar here to mongolia.

not offended. I was heavily involved with horses in another life (well, that one ended only about 10 years ago) and looked into the wild horses of Chincoteague, VA and mustangs of Texas for a potential project. I found out that BLM has funded a lot of projects regarding these hosses, which they auction each year. I was just passing along that there may be a ready answer to your question there--my recollection is that the current wild horses are fairly conclusively of European descent.

ok then.

yesterday i read a bunch of stuff. nothing at all to support my original theory about the horses coming along with the early asian immigrants, but i found that the early spanish horses, a very ancient breed, may have come from asia and the mongol type folks.

so my thought that the wild horses look a lot like the mongol horses may not be too far off at least.

very interesting horse stuff. i emailed myself a long article which i willl read when i get home.

fun,

tom w

...and, occasionally, horses do refuse. Then you go flying ass-over-appetite into the weeds.

Give me a mule any day.

Oh aint that the truth. My benefactor would get polo ponies in Argentina on occasion. From Gauchos. They do not touch them with human hands for the first two years of their lives. Then they are broken. They are very dangerous to be around and are considered "hot" in the vernacular. Try exercising them riding one and with four-in-hand. The worst job during the summer, was roaching their manes and shaving their ears and fetlocks to prevent ticks. The buzzing of the clippers drove them nuts. I would tie the halter off between the stall lane in the barn on both sides to large eye bolts and it still scared the crap out of me every time they would fight it so. Gentle as lambs for the farrier though--I think he was a horse whisperer--really.

I have been to some mule pulls--very impressive animals and a cool sport.
