Let's talk about money: Your first million?
So when will you hit your first million in assets? That includes house, minus mortgage, blah blah.
Based on today's lifestyle and earnings, wife and I are shooting for 51 years old, 13 years from now. What about you? Anyone aiming high? Higher? ![]()

Sorry Kuan, but there will be a large geographic sector making up this august body that feels that discussing such things is not proper

Regional or generational?
Quote:
He came from an old Southern family that had owned a sizable portion of the town they lived in. He would never have owned an MB, thinking it was too pretentious. He wanted a Lincoln Towncar til the day he died, but would never have bought one of those either. He often loaned his employees, brothers, more distant relatives, and sometimes nearly complete strangers money. I asked him why, because I thought many of them wouldn't pay it back. He told me he was almost certain none of them would, but he didn't do it with that in mind. He was fortunate to have more than many of them had, so he felt it was important for him to share what he had with them when he could. My dad! What a man. I still miss him a lot even after nearly twenty years. No, I don't find those kind of values nearly as often in my generation as I did in his, I'm sorry to say.

You never ask a man the size of his spread or the number of head in his herd.
Period.

If you are sorry you don't see those values, then practice them yourself to bring them back!! People will copy you. I used to do pretty well with the ladies as a bachelor, and you would be suprised how many people will try to emulate you when they first laugh at gestures they at first deem archaic..... Amy Vanderbilt is on my daughters' required reading list too.... ![]() |

Kuan- Does a "million" smiles in my heart count? Or a million "thanks you's" from my patients count? I am content with what I have and what i am working towards, it won't be a million on paper but in my heart it will be.

Most wealthier-than-average folks have their resources tied up in non-liquid assets, such as their homes. They also might over-estimate what their places are really worth, so take it all with a very large grain of salt.

I don't think it is a patrician thing at all--I was just writing silly. If there are three guys standing around and one is discussing which stock to buy with the $1M he just fell into, it would make the other two school teachers who are upside down on their leased cars uncomfortable--think about it that way. |

Keeping in mind . . .
A million dollars ain't what it used to be. I hit that a while ago, but I'm still working my butt off.
When thinking about being able to retire, I generally consider that I'll need a million dollars for every $50K a year I need to live on. That's liquid assets, not total net worth. If you can average 6-9% growth a year, you can tap into that for 5% to live on without getting into your principal and still leaving a little to account for inflation. I figure I'll probably need about $100-125K a year to quit working completely, hence I would need $2-2,500,000 total of income producing assets in order to no longer require a salary. See what I mean?
