I would recomend, as already stated in this thread, either a German Shepard, or a Chow. Both protective. German shepards are just large, and quite energetic when they want to be. My freinds G. Sh. would even let me into his house for like the first six months I knew the guy. But after getting to know him, he was great, and very affectionate.

Where have I seen him before?
Oh, yeah. I think that was Robert Mapplethorpe's dog. Wasn't it?

akitas...
are also(chows) notoriously quiet.they were afterall bred as hunters as well as guard dogs.someone mentioned earlier in this post about dogs and kids and what not to leave them with -for that mix i recommend a newfoundland140#+).size alone is a deterrent, but of course you will need stock in purina!very friendly unless they do not know you...

Dog food
I used Eukanuba for my dog's until I adopted Henry. His body is out of whack and he has all kinds of allergies and skin issues. For that reason I decided to switch to Flint River Farm. This is an all natural dog food that can only be ordered online. It's twice baked so the kibble is smaller (you don't have to feed them as much).
The nice thing about it is that they drop ship which means I don't have to go to the pet shop to get it. None of the supermarkets sold Eukanuba and it was always a pain in the neck to head to petsmart to get it. I order and a big brown box turns up on my door step. Abby then stands guard over it until I put it away. ![]()

It is funny that you are talking about all of these breeds of dogs. I am in the process of adopting a Border Collie, but was not thinking about the dog as a "guard dog". BC's are very obedient, easily trained and generally (IMHO) the coolest breed out there. Any stories of "Border Collies Gone Wild"?

Well after 5 months, Goliath, is 45 lbs. My son is visiting this weekend so he is staying with us. He is a pure bred my son got from a breeder, who has been raising them for years.
He is a very well behaved dog and is extremely athletic. He has a very nice disposition, doesn't bark much and has surprised me after all the negativity associated with them. Dade county has banned them and I believe Broward and Palm beach are trying to. If it weren't for the fact that they are illegal here, I would consider keeping him.

Howdy Plantman,
Breed specific bans suck.

Didn't catch Goliath's breed...
My neighbors in Atlanta had two red-nose pits. They were energetic, intelligent, and willful. I watched them for two weeks while the neighbors were out, and behaved as their alpha. Took them a day to get the message, and then they were incredible. Walking on and off leash without problems, coming, sitting, staying, not jumping, etc. When I would see them out with the owners even months later I could just give them a glance and they'd start behaving. Owners had no idea what they were doing with them. And that's my biggest piece of advice to you in your dog search. Almost any dog can be whatever you want it to be. It takes training. And, that's your job. If you're no good at teaching the dog what you want it to do, it's not going to learn (unless maybe it's a border collie or aussie shepherd or jack russell and consequently smarter than most humans). So, if you want it to bark like an idiot anytime anyone is approaching your home, you can train that. Even if it's an otherwise sedate dog. It's all in the training. What you should do is get a pooch whose size and temperament and exercise needs are a good fit for you. Pure bred, mutt, whatever. I suggest a rescued adult dog (shelter, purebred rescue, animal rescue league, etc.) who has been altered. Crate train the dog. If you're usually good with dogs and have had good luck in the past, work on some basics with the dog yourself. Be aware of your unconscious messages that you send to the dog, as they are just as important, if not more-so than the intended messages you send overtly. If you've got specific needs and aren't sure how to get the dog to do what you want it to do, I strongly recommend Bark Busters. They are initially a bit spendy, but their results are incredible (and they have a lifetime guarantee) Good luck!
