Is it possible to set a default in private messages so a copy of a reply is not automatically saved?

I'm not sure of your statement "copy of a reply".

The software keeps the PM's sent out under "sent items". I don't believe that you can turn this feature off.

I presume that you don't wish to have them accumulate in the "sent items" folder. You can delete the accumulated group with two clicks. There is a check box above the group.........all the way on the right side........check this box and drop down and delete the entire set.
