Depends on where you live. If you make 75k a year and live in Arkansas you can live a pretty good life. If you make 75k a year and live in the Santa Clara Valley you can't afford to rent an apartment.

Move to Ak then....just kidding. Easier said than done. You'd probably make a hell of a lot less in AK.

What's basics? For a single person, per year...

Housing: 6k
Food: 3k
Car/gas/insurance: 6k
Clothing/shoes: 1k
Healthcare: ????

Anything else? That's 16k already and that doesn't count healthcare. That's $7.70/hr at 2080 hours a year.

I agree in part with Brian, my panties get in a bunch when I see people at the gorcery store using food stamps and then they saunter their designer jeaned fat butts out to the Mercedes Benz. I also would like to know if the American government in part wants to keep a certain percentage of Americans in poverty by not doing something like raising the minimum wage and encouraging people not to breed if you can't afford to feed. Then their is that "benefactor movie star" who is giving millions of dollars to some other country when we have babies right here in America going to bed hungry everynight. They can do what they want with their own money but you'd like to think you would want to help people in your own backyard. Mistress Heather is baffled by this.

Poverty in the US means 300-pound people who don't work.

Can't argue with that one.

Obesity is an epidemic among the poor because they eat the cheapest calorie laden foods. Beef and chicken livers, pork belly, sour cream, etc. My wife's relatives still eat like that, some of them live in urban areas, some are still farmers. It's hard to change frugal ways.

Before your time, there was a lengthy thread on the mimimum wage. There is an agrument, one that I don't ascribe to, that suggests raising the minimum wage will leave all people currently employed at the minimum wage.......unemployed.

Why?

Because the employer cannot afford to pay such people more than the current $5.15 per hour and, therefore, he would lay them off. If they are not worth $6.65 per hour, then the employer won't pay them $6.65 per hour.

As I mentioned, I don't agree with this theory and it's the subject of another, lengthy, and interesting thread.

Our conditioning can be a trap of poverty. We've been trained to expect a free stick – inflation. Instead of saving, the poor and soon to be poor, have been sucked into feeling that if they over extend themselves and manage it for a few years their income will rise enough to compensate. The pressure is that prices also rise so logic dictates “buy it now” and pay interest instead of earning it. Is something wrong with that picture? I'd say so, and think it helps to explain the stress that tears at the fabric of our society. I live very close to a very poor Mexican boarder town, and although people don't have spit, they seem on balance happier than the average guy on this side of the line.
