in the muslin culture (i was told when in morrocco in 1973) you are (traditionally at least, i dont know if it is currently legal) allowed more than one but you must have a house for each of them.

for myself, keeping one wife happy is enough to deal with. (dont tell her i said that)

actually i wouldnt want another one.

although when younger a lot of them looked good. now, older and wiser, i know that they may look fine but i wouldnt like them all that much, probably.

I think part of the problem was that he deals in underage girls, who often don't consent to their marriages... that's a problem. A pretty big one, if you ask me.

Me, I could happily do with a couple of husbands -- oddly, mormonism and muslimism (ha ha) don't seem to support the notion that's what's good for the goose is good for the gander... wonder why not? I wouldn't want to be one wife in a harem of wives, though, unless I was also allotted one poolboy for my own personal use.

I agree, as long as nobody is being held against their will and age of consent I have no clue what the big deal is. Personally i think it would be too much work.

The big deal is that most of these marriages are forced, and most of these people are on public assistance. When public assistance finds out there is polygamy involved, public assistance ceases, and these kids get neglected. There is also the fact that they won't use birth control, and a large amount of the time the last two or three out of the litter are born with severe birth defects, which no one seems to give a **** about, because there are 10 other sons. It is a sick practice and Jeffs is a child molester.

From what little I know about the group (I read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer), it's an ugly authoritarian sect worthy of scorn, but the polygamy and underage girl charges seem somewhat beside the point to me, except insofar as they point out the group is outside established social norms. After all, the children getting married off in that community would probably be having sex with other kids the same age if they didn't live in that sect. If sex outside of marriage is bad, isn't that system better in that respect? Many cultures arrange marriages for people, but I haven't heard of any prosecution of American Hindus.

Adults coerce children into specific life patterns all the time. We force children to attend school for instance. Is the problem that children are coerced into a marriage relationship that is permanent, whereas you can chose not to attend school when you're 16? Is it that young girls are paired with old men with whom they don't want to have sex? Children in the Oneida community sometimes complained about this. Is the problem just intergenerational sex, or is it that intergenerational sex is an indication of too much power in the hands of adult males? If the children were establishing polygamous marriages with other children the same age, would it be the same problem?

I'm a advocate of throwing out the wedding ceremony in favor of a "real estate" ceremony. When you get the urge to get married, buy a duplex together, see as much of each other as you want, but you can still go home and get some peace and quiet whenever you want.

Am I the only one who's had this thought?

My grandma and grandpa EACH had 13 bothers and sisters. They got married at 14 and 15, and were married for 48 years before she died of bone cancer.

I have a wife, an x-wife who I avoid like the plague, and 7 kids...why a man would voluntarily put himself in the situation of dealing with more than one woman on a daily basis is a mystery to me. The power struggle that would rage is enough to scare me off.
