Ioke

Anybody been watching Ioke, the super typhoon in the Pacific? The military has evacuated Wake Island, which is expected to be totally submerged when the surge hits it.

I saw a ewbsite called the Ty Fu project or something like that. It's surfers who try to get into the paths of storms like this to surf the huge waves ahead of them. Unbelieveable!

I can't make it to Japan, so I'm going to NC this afternoon for the weekend. I hope Ernesto has petered out by then.

Hey, Carleton, have you ever seen that PBS special about the big hurricane that hit Long Island in 1939? Being the history buff that you are, I would imagine so.

I can think of one area in Rhode Island that has yet to recover from that storm.

I remember that the water in downtown Providence, RI was above the first floor of the buildings. Seeing the full power and fury of nature unleashed like that is truly awe-inspiring.

So I guess New Orleans' inability to lurch back to its feet after only a year doesn't look so bad. . . .

I just saw a program about it, on the Hitler Channel.

Katherine Hepburn and her family were prominently featured in the program.

What area hasn't recovered?

I can think of another...

The beach at the bottom left had a bridge connecting it to the other side...it was completely wiped out and never rebuilt after the hurricane of 1938. Everytime I want to go to a party across the shore, I curse at the fact that bridge wasn't rebuilt.

I was talking about Oakland Beach in Warwick. It used to be a rather posh area before the hurricane. Not so today. It does have Iggy's, though, which is to its credit. Mmmm, Iggy's.

I think Kyle is probably right, though - 1938. I was assuming the hurricane that hit Long Island must have been the same one. Maybe not? I don't know. It's been a few years since I lived in RI now but the old timers used to talk about that storm a lot.

Wasn't that the bridge where a school bus full of kids was washed over and several children died?
