Montreal?????

My wife and I are hoping to take a quick trip to Montreal over the Thanksgiving holiday. Would someone recommend a hotel in the downtown area or anywhere that would be nice? Some place not too expensive. Also what should we see while in Montreal???? Any other advice will be appreciated. Jay

The Hyatt Regency Montreal
1255 Jeanne Mance Street

I stayed there last year in November. There is an underground mall below the hotel and also a metro station connection. If the weather is bad, you won't have to go outside the Hotel complex to shop, dine, or travel to other locations around the city.

Try Expedia or Priceline and you'll save a bundle off room rates. Top notch accomodations at a fair price, if you shop around.

Do not stay at the TAJ MAHAL.....my friends did the booking and it was in the middle of the Montreal slums.

I've been there over the summer and would probably never go back. It's a cool city and all but it's definitely not what I expected. Many bums, prostitutes and strip clubs all over the place.

Hotel Intercontinental is nice, right downtown. Fantastic night views from the upper floors - corner suites are nice.

Things to do and see? Almost too many to mention. The 'Vieux-port' or Old Port region of Montreal is gorgeous and IMO a must-see. Fabulous restaurants, entertainment, etc. A lot of old cobblestoned streets and boutiques, it oozes old-world charm. The biodome is great is you have kids.

If you are into music, especially jazz, there are tons of clubs around. Montreal's jazz scene is excellent. Tons of great pubs too - Peel Pub is a fav of mine. Oh, and then there's the smoked meat sandwiches...asking where the best ones are can start a holy-war debate on the subject...but my bet is on Schwartz's...

Have a great trip!

Were you confined to a one block radius on St. Catherine St.? With all due respect kamil, you've just described the red light area of every major city in the world.

A must experience cultural institution is Schwartzes Delicatessen on Boul. St. Laurent. Best smoked meat sandwich on the face of the earth. The historic part of the city is very nice to walk through, day or night.

When we went we stayed here....

http://reservations.montrealhotelsinc.com/hotel/10010043-11242892O.html

Not overly cheap kinda middle of the road. Nice place though.

We also found Montreal to be the cleanest and safest feeling (if there is such a thing) major city we had ever been to. Check out what events they have going on. When we were there they had a great lantern festival at their botanic gardens (which I see is going on again). Also, They have a great subway system you can pretty much take it anywhere you need to go.

Have fun!
