What's It Worth???

I just found a very nice lookin 76 (I think) white 280 SE in the parking lot outside of Best BUy. I saw 3 in the last day.
So the owner's husband pulls up & it's his wife's daily rider. & She wants a new car. (women???!) He bought it from the Original owner 1 yr ago.
Has 124,000 orig miles. Exterior is at least an 8 of 10. no rust/ no dings / nice paint. Interior is 30 yrs old but not too bad. worn seats , 1 dash crack about 3''s.
Sunroof is sealed; needs A/C charged; not on R134A yet;
He said give her 3,000. and she will sell it. right away. SO she has her down payment for the newer car.

What do you think???

I know that the V8 450 SE/SEL/SL cars from 1975-76 are not coveted because of the location of the catalytic converter - it's under the hood, and they got real hot, could fry the wiring, cause underhood fires - that issue was fixed in 1977 when the cat was moved downstream

You should verify the location of the cat before making your offer on this car, if the car has the cat under the hood I would be inclined to pass on it for that reason alone.

To me that would be the threshold question, if it passes that test, then I would be OK with checking out the car further, having it inspected, checked for rust. For $3000 it had better be AWFUL nice, near to perfect.

might be an early 77 titled in 76.

it wouldnt surprise if the model change didnt follow the model year strictly. benz tended to change things whenever they thought of it without regard to model years.

totally unlike detroit in the same period.

OK not sure about the year.

But does anyone know anything about these like what to look for quirky things onthis model? All I know is Diesels now......I forgot what a regular car is like.

Austin, check in the Vintage Car forum. I have been lurking there for a few weeks and have noticed at least two discussions on these cars. Jim from SF seems to know more about old MB's than the ghost of Gottlieb. Good luck.
