*&%#$# Dry Cleaners!
I took a nice Italian suit to the dry cleaners for an event this weekend. Picked it up today and notice this evening the coat looks as it has been shrunk, pants have some strange red wax stuff all over them. WTF???
It looked great when I dropped it off. What would be in order here? A new suit, partial compensation?? I've worn this one maybe three times. Small town cleaners

Go in there and cause a scene. I've had shirts destroyed and they usually asked me how much they cost, then they paid me for them. These shirts weren't as expensive as your suit but they did pay.

What ever happened to being reasonable and polite??? You won't go far in this world by causing a scene whenever something negative happens. As the old expression goes, You will catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar. Treat others as you would want them to treat you. I know that things in this world are rapidly changing, but I still believe in civility. Dusty...

Coincidentally, the people who make the most noise are likely candidates for getting stabbed in the face!
Some people don't get told "no" enough. But anyways, just be civil. They will compensate you. |

This happened to a nylon flight jacket I took in; I had left some Chapstick in the sleeve pocket and they didn't check it closely. I had a nice waz stain on that sleeve for the rest of the life of the jacket, but it was my fault. Could there have been lipstick in a pocket or something? Not that you'd carry lipstick, but maybe your wife asked you to hold it or something...
![]() As for the shrinking -- that's just plain weird! I'd start out politely -- "catch more flies with honey," as they say. If need-be, firmly escalate it and ask to speak to a manager and finally the owner.

Unfortunately the woman working there is somewhat "vinegar" in nature already.
I'm sure they job this work out. Although they should check the end result. I'm taking the suit in this morning with a 'firm' smile on. We'll see how long the honey last. I don't know why but this really chapped my a$$ for some reason. The incompetence of people these days amazes me. A good friend of mine went to the ER last week after a fall. He was sent home. Now he is paralized from the waste down. Did the ER staff screw up? Who knows... My loss is insignificant to his but it is still (could be) the result of someone elses ignorance. Sorry, I just needed to vent. Rant over. Have a great day! |

Hey! I live in NJ, and that hardly applies to me.
![]() In fact, I think I'm the only driver in this state that puts his blinker on to change lanes / turn... *WAITS*... and then goes into the lane. Not the common zig-zagging blinker maneuver that so many Jerseyites seem to enjoy doing (turning, and blinking once while in mid-turn / lane change). As far as causing a scene? I've only done that once.. mostly because I'm of the belief that you WILL catch more flies with honey, than with vinegar. I don't care if one of your almighty Rutgers classes taught you to be an ass to people "because it works better".. the truth is, these people are just like everybody here... doing a job. Want proof that treating people rudely isn't as effective? I work in IT.. systems administration, to be exact. My last job, was working at a hospital, with a huge IT staff. Whenever we got a user making angry demands, and screaming at us.. guess where that user went in the queue? Also, anybody who made a scene, would have all the company rules come down on top of them. Where usually we'd overlook things like browsing the internet.. that user would now become locked-down, unable to use AIM or whatnot. If they complained, we simply stated it was company policy. Treating people with disrespect doesn't get you any special treatment. In fact, it makes that person hate you, and become even less likely to do anything for you. Besides.. since this *IS* America.. businesses have the right to not serve you. Sure, you may get your way by screaming at a store clerk (or they may get pissed, and just not help you at all).. but you stand an equal chance of them calling the cops on you, ejecting you from the store, and banning you in the process. Now, you can't go back, get the embarassment of being thrown out.. and have a potential to get arrested. Apparently Rutgers doesn't teach their students to be civilized human beings. Either that, or you've just had a very bad upbringing. Go ahead and make a scene wherever you go.. I really don't care. But don't be upset when you piss off the wrong person, and end up with a fist in your teeth. |

Right on Zerohour--don't waste your time, though--you can't impart class over the internet, but the market will take care of the situation in short order when and if he graduates.
I have to deal with this issue several times a year. Win some lose some. I could do more about it than the average person, but you know what, sometimes I have probably been wrong and didn't know it and I believe it all works out in the ..... wash. Now that I have two babies, I have no idea what is on my suits, shirts and ties when they get picked up anyway! Make sure you have a receipt or catalogue with the price of the suit when you go in so they won't think you are trying to defraud them. |

Well, that's the thing.
I'm not discounting the fact that "making a scene" works. Sometimes you simply need to do it. I went to a junkyard once, and dealt with the typical "junkyard owner white trash". You know, the kind you see in movies, who rips people off intentionally? It was a pull it yourself kind of deal. I went in the back, and grabbed a zebrano ashtray, and a used glow plug relay. The guy told me in advance that he'd keep it cheap, under 25 bucks. I get up there, and he starts changing the rules "Oh, well this IS mercedes stuff.. it's worth a lot of money.. and that's in pretty good shape.. so.. now it's gonna cost you $95". I tried being reasonable, saying that he already gave me a price.. and that if he REALLY wanted, I'd give him five bucks more. Apparently this guy gave his other customers a hard time, too.. because when I started getting loud.. the 3 people behind me actually chimed in, and told the guy off. So while it DOES work (and is needed) for some people.. doing it to everybody who messes up is just horrible and unnecesscary. Good luck making it in the 'real world'.

Were the parts truly worth $95 ????? Was $25 super cheap for those parts, because the yard owner really didn't know the true cost?? Most yards price the parts around 1/2 of what a new part goes for. He told you that it was "going to be cheap, under 24 bucks", but did you tell him that the parts that you had come for were Mercedes parts? No, because if you had, he wouldn't have said that. Three more people chiming in to a situation that they have no financial interest in, doesn't change the situation much. It just turns it into a mob where the owner feels threatened. If I were the owner, I would have said to set the parts down and for all four of you to leave and never return. He has an obligation to be fair and keep his word, but you also have an obligation to be honest up front and tell him all the facts about what parts you are after and from what type of car. I am certain that you don't like to get ripped off, nor does he. He has to pay more for a Mercedes parts car than he would a Yugo parts car. Your screaming and yelling might have gotten you the parts for the $25 or $30 that you offered, but I doubt that you are welcome in that yard any longer. Ever think that the yard owner has gotten that reputation because of people that try to defraud him by not giving the full intent of what they are there to get? I know lots of yard owners like him, but I am also welcome at all those yards. I treat them with respect and I get respect in return. |

Just another example of the demise of civilization.

FWIW, I was raised in a ranting houshold. If my parents didn't get their way, they raised hell until they did or someone ran them off. It was always ugly and embarrasing. In my 50+ years of breathing on this planet, I've tried it both ways and greatly prefer the calm approach. I find it to be much more satisfying, less stressful than the other modes. By treating others with respect, I generally get exactly what I need too. And, unless somone is a complete dirtbag, they usually want to do the right thing when taking care of a customer problem Whiskey Dan, I say remember the golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Well, the owner was a real scumbag to begin with. Womanizer, cat caller, the works. He truely was like a sleeze-bag dealer from some sort of movie.
He does this sort of thing to all his customers.. so much so, that he's had every camera in the back smashed in with rocks, and all his customers steal from him (two customers told me, out of the blue, to just throw stuff over the fence and get it later). What pisses me off even further, is that the guy had the gall to jack up the price, simply because he had no idea what the parts were worth. Even in perfect condition, the parts were hardly worth $50, let alone $100. Even worse, was the last time I went to him (and the last time I'll ever go again). He'd told me to go in the back and grab whatever I wanted for "real cheap", because he was scrapping every mercedes he had (the guy had about 10 W123's, 18 W116's, and a boatload of other benzes, including some euros). Figuring that he just wanted to make a few extra bucks before he threw these things out, I dug around for two hours, and collected a ton of small parts that I could stick on my car. Cheap things, like new wood faceplates.. a replacement foglight bulb or two.. and handfull of injectors (not typically CHEAP, but since he was throwing them out..).. etc. I walk up to the front, sweaty, tired, and dirty. Figuring he'd say something along the lines of $100 (which would still be a hell of a profit, since he probably paid $100 for the used car anyway)... I nearly burst into laughter when he came up with a ludicris figure of "Since you've been coming here for a while, I'll give all that to you for $550". Once again, I started the calm way.. trying to explain that if he was just going to sell the cars for scrap metal anyway.. why he can't just do me a favor, and give me a fair price for once. I even offered to drop the injectors.. and got told that "they wont affect the price much anyway". Once again, I get the usual rambling about how "but it's a Mercedes!" and "Those are classic cars!", despite the fact that I can get 80% of the parts NEW for a few bucks more. Tired of dealing with this dirtbag, I dropped all the parts right in front of him, and stormed off with a hearty "F*** You". I'm not the type of person who usually cusses off a business owner, but this guy pushed every button I had. If anybody knows of a respectable junkard in NJ that has W123's.. I'd love to know. "Grizzled" I can deal with. But to try and pull a stunt like that..? |
