Keeping mag wheels balanced?
Allright, I've got a serious vibration problem in the oldsmobile, it's just a steady vibration at 50-55...
Add another 10-20mph onto that, and you've got some serious isues holding the stearing wheel. Turns out, that I've lost some wheel weights during my recent high speed crusining. I balanced all 4 tires in shop, used the special mag wheel weights, and everything was fine. Then, during a 60mph jaunt during the test drive, i got a vibration again. Wheel weight(s) fell off. Out of the 4 (of 8) I can see, only one stayed on. My instructer did a demo on my car, I only did one (which stuck)... Unless my instructor screwed up all of the wheels that he did, I think there's a problem somewhere on the balancing end. Can anybody help me? ~Nate (the vibrating trofeo owner)

Nate,
Are these wheels the factory rims? Many GM FWD alloy wheels of that era were designed to use the same clip-on wheel weights commonly used on steel wheels. Last edited by PaulC; 11-21-2006 at 06:09 PM. |

yeah, they're factory
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/NathanEbert/IMG_0017.jpg The "mag wheel" weights are a little different then the steel ones at our school's shop, the clip's a little bit wider, and I couldnt get a steel one to go on... ~Nate

You can get adhesive weights for aluminum wheels.

Ok, I should have been more specific. I meant that they were a clip-on design like those on a plain steel wheel, not adhesive "stick-on" weights that are often mounted on the inside of custom alloy wheels. Sounds like your just using the wrong model weight. Do a websearch on wheel weights.

Could be the tires. Can you feel if its the front or back vibrating?
The front tires on the SDL were driving me nuts last summer, vibrated badly between 95-100 then smoothed out. Had a slight one at 80 which was most annoying.

New speed record set tonight, whoopdieding dong. Then I looked at the porsche, yuck.... Wow but yeah, I'll buy some stick on weights, or something... I'll talk to my instructor on monday, making sure to point out that MINE staied on, and his didnt tks for the help ~Nate

The wheels could be bent. Are the front or back vibrating?

We looked at them on the balancer, and he said one had a very slight bend in the lip, but it shouldnt matter... I put it on the frount, and the vibration is comming from the back (i think)
I'll setup the machine for a high speed balance, and we'll go from there on monday. I will use the schools weights again, and see how it turns out. ~Nate *edit*how's the V-12 feel at 100+? j/w, because I know I'll never drive one... I envy your car *edit*
