I think the soldiers were teaching those kids a worthy thing - Capitalism. The one that works the hardest gets the reward.

Now what if the soldiers threw that one bottle of water into that crowd of kids? At least a few would have broken bones by the time the meelee was over. And of course, the cruel soldiers would be at fault.

Not saying 100,000 guys pull that. But you get a few hundred, or a thousand pulling insulting stuff like that day in and day out, it doesn't make many friends.

I can only imagine if I were over there, I'd be less than generous in my feelings to some of those guys. But I like what one general (maybe it was a major or a colonel, I forget) said to his charges: "Any time you abuse an Iraqi, you're working for the enemy."

The only way this thing can work is we demonsrate over and over again that we truly are the good guys. The incident in the film is a really small sort of abuse, of course. But it's the wrong path to head down, it's the heart and soul of thuggery, of nazism: treating the other like they're worthless chumps, useful only for the amusement of the ones with the power.

Yeah except the kid that ran the hardest got beat out by some bigger boys who probably didn't even know the smaller kid had been running for blocks, not that they would have cared. The soldiers just dropped the bottle, didn't heave it towards the kid, and as fate would have it, it landed right next to a group of other kids. You could see them swarming on it ahead of the kid who'd run for blocks.

I dunno why, but this sort of taunting really steams me.
