Black Friday INSANITY

My wife decides to get up at 2:30 AM to get in line at Best Buy for the 5 AM deals. She gets there before 4 AM and the line wraps completely around the store and makes several loops and ends up by carpetland. She estimated 1000 people in line. So she gives up there and gets in line at Shopko. Shopko is similar to Target for those that don't have one. She is actually near the front door there, should be a piece of cake. As five AM approaches people start sliding along the wall to skip to the front of the line. At 5 they just open the doors and people just explode into the place pushing and shoving. It's every man or woman for themselves. She gets to the 7" DVD player stack and gets one from the bottom layer. People were taking armloads of these and the 15 dollar DVD players next to them. The mad rush of people pushing and shoving made her give up her shopping expedition and she made for the checkouts like a Salmon trying to swim upstream. She came home and collapsed on the sofa. Is this what christmas has come too?

John Doe 11-24-2006 12:41 PM

My wife had all the Xmas shopping done a month ago. She and my mother are at the spa today:cool:

Had mine done in September.....I start in january......

PaulC 11-24-2006 04:51 PM

This type of thing is so not me. Unless they were giving away a Bugatti Veyron to each of the first 50 customers, you would literally have to hold a pistol to my skull to prompt me to wait in line for hours for "discounted" products.

We're so much alike. I start my Christmas shopping in January as well...for the preceding Christmas. My brother also drips with holiday sentimentality. For years I would give him a cash Christmas gift and would receive his cash Christmas gift a few hours later, an amount that was exactly 50% of what I gave to him. One year, sharpie that I am, I said that I would give him his "gift" after I received his. That was in 1992. I'm still waiting.

Ditto.

My wife does most of her Christmas shopping throughout the year on ebay. So many of the people we give gifts to want gift cards, that she finds them on ebay for a discount off of the face value of the card.

Hatterasguy 11-24-2006 05:14 PM

Its ridiculous. I don't give many gifts, I hate it. I give people I am close too one good thing each, that I buy a day or two before Christmas. This year Christmas is on a monday, I'll do my shopping thursday morning.

Saving a couple bucks isn't worth waking up early and fighting the crowds.

Christmas is getting crazy, what happend to just sitting around a good meal with family? Screw the crap, all it does is break.

Austin85 11-25-2006 12:09 AM

Can't argue with the fact that this is a sick way of buying stuff;
But,
my son (18) and 3 of his friends slept out at Best Buy last night. I stopped by around 9:30PM 1/2hr after they got there, and they were about 100 in line. Just onto the grass past BB & Beyond.
There was maybe 150 people there, mostly teens and 20's, and they were having a blast. Reminded me of whenwe waited on lines for concerts in the good ol days. Except alot cleaner, and we never played Monopoly waiting on line for Dead shows, and I don't think anyone had a baby at Best Buy.....lol
I gave my son 200. to get me a digital camera, and keep the change. I got a nice 7.1 MPX Kodak thingy, and he got $60. for the effort.
A friend of his got a Toshiba laptop for 250.
Being that most of the people I saw were young I think it was a pretty cool opportunity for them to take their weekly checks and buy stuff they normally couldn't afford.

I was going to get in line at BestBuy for a Westinghouse 22" LCD monitor they were selling for $200 ($300 off retail). I got there at 3am, saw the line for about 1/4mile and said "Fu*k that."

I could not agree more.

I usually buy early. But I also really enjoy making gifts for family members. For the last couple years, I've taken old damaged family photos and restored them myself using photoshop. I then frame and give them out. Not only is that economical, but it sure is a great gift that will always be cherished!

Dood, it was fun. I parked the ML on the sidewalk in line. :)

Anyways, I was number 43 through the door at best buy.... I am 18 and have nothing else to do so some friends and I thought "Why not..." We brought a TV and my 360. We linked it into my laptop tethered to my friends MOTO Q. We played halo 2 live from 9.00 PM until they opened doors.... Anyways, I got 2 17" flat panel monitors, a Toshiba Projector, two digital cameras, and a 32" lcd. All cheap. Well, I had fun in the process.

snp8990 11-25-2006 08:13 PM

I went to Best Buy and Circuit City on Friday at around 3 and I saw the crowds and drove home.I had my eye on a 42'' LCD TV that were 5 per store,I get there and im all excited because I came back at 12 and they still had one left.I buy it,come home, pulling it out of the car,im looking at the box, read the very, very small print, found out the TV is really a 42'' LCD computer monitor.

Not the car, but that was purchased at the perfect time. With a wty and when MB came out with the W221.

Edit: Brian, you have that beatiful garden/landscaping? My wife would like to see those pics. Planning has begun for her big project.

Yep, I sure don't need a pile of the latest crap from Best Buy.

I've got 1 1/2 acres of sand and weeds...........I can't take any credit for a beautiful garden since I haven't the time to deal with it..........:o

Actually, two of them are section 8. I have the opposing experiences as compared to yourself.

Both of them are fine people who have a disabled child or husband and have been in the dwellings for about 10 years. Both take resonable care of the premises, and both don't bother me for stupid crap.

My only problem is that the program for one of them has determined that I'm way over the allowance for a two bedroom ($1200. with utilities included) so, I've not received any rent increase in four years. Oh, well, there are worse problems.............

MedMech 11-26-2006 12:12 PM

I needed freezer bags to get my venison in the freezer and planned my routes carefully to avoid being caught in a retail district...and succeeded, Mission Accomplished.

Christmas is for kids at Rancho Medmech, wifey and I limit ourselves to a small gift and to be honest it is challenging to find a nice gift for less than $50.00

Heck a nice Rabbit goes for more than $90 nowadays.

If I had TheDons money I would buy a 6 pack of socks.

You guys are missing the whole object, first if we want something we buy it its immature to wait for your wife to buy it for you, second try and find a meaningful gift for less than $50.00 for a person who has had or the ability to have anything he.she wants its much harder than you think.

I know how that is. My family is very good family friends with a very wealthy family who has two ferraris. (Yes ones old, and ones new.) But anyways, I gave him 2 ferrari keychains that I got off of ebay, and everytime I go over to his house, he makes a point to show me the keychains. TOTAL COST... 32.74

Nate 11-26-2006 10:00 PM

I spend $50 on shirts, pants, and boots monday the 13th... Loaded the TRUNK OF MY CAR!!!!!!!

Half off at savers (used stuff)

that's how I spend $50.....

I got my mommie to go into our store at 6:30, and buy a waterloo toolbox for $70 (regular $170)... Just the top part, but DAMN it's the top of the line stuff.... BLACK, BALL BEARING DRAWYERS:D :D :D Coulda/shoulda gotten the bottom one for $130 (regular $230)... but o well...

We had another hell of a deal, $50 for a regularly $100 autodarkening KT welding helmet... yeah...

Genisis? brand tools (OK stuff, but save ur recite), really good deals. 18 volt 1/2" drill, $20 (regulary $50) How can you pass that up???

Some other stuff too, but whatever, if u dont have money, and want to buy expensive things, go after thanksgiving...

but retail employes like myself HATE YOUR ASS!!!

one guy (first in the door), at 6AM, the opening for the 3 hour sale, decided to ask me technical questions on the helmet...

sir, I'd love to answer your questions in two hours, but I'm swamped right now.

we had a bigazz display of them, and people couldnt find them.... OPEN UR DAMN EYES

About time for Black Friday again.

Only Wal-Mart, Sears, Ace Hardware, Harbor Freight, Tommy Hilfiger Outlet, Macy's and Toys R Us are confirmed to have released lists right now.

Benzadmiral 10-30-2007 10:42 AM

Teh horrorz

I still call it "Day after Thanksgiving," and refuse to shop on that day. I hate crowds at the best of times and detest waiting in any line.

The best Day after T I ever spent was about 9 years ago, when I lived in Denver. Drove the 280CE up into the mountains and over Loveland Pass via US 6, in cold clear weather. Fantastic.
.

Dee8go 10-30-2007 11:04 AM

The entire concept of waiting on a line to pay hard earned money for a product that the seller wants to unload seems inane to me.

Recently, I walked out of Waldbaums and left my six items for the manager (when he comes in the next morning) because they were down to 1 cashier at 8:00 p.m.

Everybody should speak with their feet...........these establishments would provide suitable staffing or they'd fail. Just look at HomeDepot..........still dropping sales due to insufficient staff.

Dee8go 10-30-2007 11:36 AM

Yeah, Brian. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

It's coming along very nicely, Mistress. Thanks for asking.
