What kind of 'challenges' can I expect when installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on an old Dell Pentium 2 notebook, compared with installing XP on a modern PC?
I read, for instance, that NT4 doesn't contain much drivers.
Reason for installing NT4 is that the notebook has 128Mb RAM only, which makes XP vvvverrrrrryyy slow.

Just use W2K. That's our standard on old PIIs with limited memory.

I second that. I believe some Win2K drives will work on NT but it'll probably be trouble. NT doesn't have the greatest support. As far as windows goes, 2000 is a great OS.

That's a great solution for someone who wants or needs to run Windows applications.

You don't want to run NT any more. It's soon to be EOL'd, if it hasn't already.

2K works great on older machines. Probably better than NT.

If you really want to use it get a 256 or 512mb SDRAM and put it in there. I too would reccomend at least Win2k because it will be huge pain trying to find drivers for all of the system devices as NT is not PNP whatsoever.

Depending on the info you have on the laptop, you might (Might) be able to get more ram. I wouldn't pay much, but search eBay, never know what you might find.

I don't have to respect too many people anymore.

Tried finding extra RAM, but no result.
I'm considering the following options now:
- Windows 2000 Workstation (thanks for the tip you all!)
- Linux distro: VectorLinux 5.1
Will start with the Linux one, and see how it performs.

BTW, I've discovered a set of DVD's on P2P ('Pirate Bay': http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3243961/All_Windows_DVD) that contains ALL Windows OS' starting with W98 up to W2003, ....free to download

Vronksky, if you know your notebook model, go to www.kahlon.com and they have a whole database for most all computers and you can check the max capacity for memory there.

I just spent the better part of the day installing a new 20GB hard drive into an old Thinkpad 600 that had a 6GB. I have W2K Pro since there's not much ram to run XP efficiently. Hardware installation was a snap . . . the biggest time consumption was downloading all the updates, drivers and utility programs that took most of the afternoon. Anyone migrating W2K . . . make sure you have the Service Pack 4 before doing anything.

BTW, I have nothing but good things to say about Acronis True Image 10 (there's a 15 day trial version to download) for doing disk image and file archival for restoration. I like it better than Norton Ghost.

I think a downloadable version (fully licensed) can be purchased for ~$32, too.

I bought TrueImage 9 (my first disk image utility) after it finally sank in with me just how much hassle it is to set up a machine. If it lets me pull the fat out of the fire even once, then yes, that's easily the better part of a day saved.

A friend in the IT field recommended it to me. They use it to clone machines when setting up new boxes at their company. They also make images before making upgrades to any of their engineering packages - if something goes sour, they can use it to effect a thorough "undo".

Linux seems fine for anyone with LOADS of spare time on his hands... W2K is the daddy for old notebooks.

Browse craigslist....if there is one for Amsterdam and see if someone has some PC100 256MB or 512MB. I don't always buy from Kahlon for my clients but it's a good resource nonetheless.

We have W2K in all our older machines. There are occasional issues with things suddenly not working after security updates. For linux I would suggest CentOS which is a delabeled RedHat.
