Old boat question

Saw some pics of a couple of old Gar Wood boats from 75 years ago. One has a 700 cubic inch flathead 6 that weighs 1200lbs. Anybody know who would have made the engines?

Fred

continentals and hercules were both used a lot in boats. i think there may be a couple of other common ones too. both were respected quality engines.

Maybe Curtis Aviation or Algonquin or CC Smith Boat Company engine (they made alot of engines for CC in the '20s, though), but I doubt it is 700 cid unless it has twins and it is an 80 ft. Chris Craft! Go to the Mariner's Museum website when I was researching old Gar Wood boats they have an archive.

......I think the 1922 record was broken by the CC Packard that topped out at 45 mph or so (The boat is in Jacksonville, FLA, but I will have to google to find it)

Edit: My friends' was the record for a six cyl. 20 ft. apparently. It looks like they had 12 cyl. CC Packards around 1925 that made 500 hp and topped out at 55-60 but I don't know what lenghts.

Maybe it is a Kermath. There were several marine engine makers in the late 20's. Unfortunately, if you want parts, you are making them yourself in many cases. One of the ultimate marine engines of the time was the Liberty engine. It was used in airplanes, military vehicles and boats.

The post WWII stuff is much more plentiful. Chris Craft based on Chrysler long blocks and Gray Marine based on continental longblocks are still plentiful and many parts are available. A place in Ft. Lauderdale still has parts for the old Paramount reverse gears.

The robber barons had "Express Cruisers" that they would use to get from their estates up the Hudson and on Long Island Sound in to Manhattan. I don't know how fast they went but they were the fastest things going between the wars. Some had double and triple section steam turbines. The wake of one boat caused such damage to the shoreline that the boat owner was sued by the person with the damaged shoreline. That must have been some wake.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was after 1930 that 100 was broken from an old book I read about Don Arronow.

I have several friends that have restored Chris Crafts and the like, but I am going to put that dream up for when I am at least 50.

Tick over 60 knots in the late 30's.

Saw her in person this summer, it is one of the most beautiful boats I have ever saw. I literally was stopped in my tracks when I saw that thing, the wood work and varnish are simply amazing. Her history is amazing as well, had Packerd V12's original, three of them. The owner was constantly repowering to get more speed, I think after the war they were pumped to 2,000 each. FDR used said boat during the war.

I'll have to look at some of my old Chris Craft stuff, I think in the late 20's they were selling boats that were good for damn near 40mph.

Prepare to drool, Hattie.

Wow that is a beautiful boat!

Check out:

The Miss Ann is about 5 miles from my place in VA and I plan on celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary on her. When I managed a marina in Deltaville, VA in the early '90s, they were just finishing up the refit on the Miss Ann in a yard that the company I worked for owned. I have stayed in touch with the crew and one of the Captains and we (my family) go out for a dinner cruise at least once a year in July. They had a party for one of the old skippers last year for his 90th b-day--that was a blast. Never seen so many double breasted navy blazers and martinis together at one time south of Cape Cod
