I'm with Austin, spend your cash on a trip or a new Benz, Hattie.

IMHO, the only kinds of people who can own a quality katana and pull it off without looking like a Steven Seagal wannabe poseur are really, really rich people and really, really weird people. And the odd serious collector. Or seriously odd collector.

Besides, you'll inevitably bring it out one night when friends are over and you're all drunk and partying and someone will lose a finger or get Bobbitted by mistake as you act out your favorite movie scenes. "There can be only one!!!" *snip*

Thats what I was shooting for! But eventualy I am going to get my own pad and need some neat stuff to decorate it. I am thinking those swords would look just killer behind a desk or on a wall. Maybe with a few other swords. I don't want anything cheap or fake so if I buy one it has to be real and of good quality. I am thinking I want to do an Asian theme, with a twist. Plus these things are just so cool. For some reason Japanese things just attract me to no end, my house is going to full of them.

Van Staal oh yeah I need to get one of those two, so many toys so little money.

Travel? Yeah I'll be doing a lot of that soon if I get into an internship that I am trying for. No details yet its to up in the air.

Yup--my sentiments exactly. Hatt--a gay blade will not make your bachelor pad look cool......but some pictures of your arm around some costa riquenas might make some lass want to find out what she is missing....

If you want to travel, why not get with a delivery capn like I did when I was doing your job and deliver yachts for six months or so?? Even just down the ditch and fly back it is still fun!

But I thought the blade was cool! Thats why I posted it, now I have feedback!

I'm not really looking to travel much at the moment. I have to much on the burner locally. Actualy there is big money to be made crewing, there is a big shortage in the industry.

I think my parents would frown on me blowing off school for six months to mess around on boats.

Once you have your katana, get yourself and a few friends, a bokken. I have a friend who studies swordfighting, and we have loads of fun just messing about with them. And you would be amazed how much of a hammering they take without even splintering!

Yeah when I was little we used to beat eachother with sticks, in a sword fighting sort of way. Its always fun getting hit with a bambo pole.

I can ask...

My daughters take Tae Kwon Do and are both blackbelts. Their instructor is a 5th degree..... and just named his new daugher Katana. Is there a particular brand or just looking at what is thought of as good and bad?

Well the company in the link makes them, I don't know if they are any good. Thanks but don't bother, I'm just looking.

opinions...

Hatty,

I happened to catch up with the TKD instructor over a beer. He said there are many things to consider for a katana if you are going to use it for more than a decoration...

1. balance - it should be 50 -50, see if it balances at mid point in the sword

2. weight - kind of like a tennis racket, it depends on you. I seem to recall you are pretty good sized, so a heavier sword would not be a issue. Smaller folks might need a lighter one to get it around in time for self defense.

3. Metal - the usual knife issue of metal quality vs. cost. Doesn't matter if it is a pocket knife, kitchen knives, or a sword. $ is needed for quality

4. Testing - the instructor said they used to test technique on cadavers. A single swipe to sever a limb or other part... 8(. Now they use a bamboo shoot wrapped with something to simulate the muscle tissue. A good katana should be able to cut this with a single hit. Again the heavier sword will hit harder if you can swing it. For a smaller person, a lighter one might work better if they can swing it faster.

Chuck
