I just got this in an email. Perhaps some of you did as well. I have no idea who the original author is, nor how true it all is. However, I do think it is worth a thought, and worth passing on. For myself - I will state that I have flown over the area a few times following the storm, and it certainly appears that they did get hit pretty hard. I’ve never seen that much white in that area.



This text is from a county emergency manager out in the central part of Colorado after the snowstorm.

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:
George Bush did not come.
FEMA did nothing.
No one howled for the government.
No one blamed the government.
No one even uttered an expletive on TV
Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.
Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.
Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.
CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm.
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.
No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.
No one looted.
Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.
Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.
No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.
No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.
Nope, we just melted the snow for water.
Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.
The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.
Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.
Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.
We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.
We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".
We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.
Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.
"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate."
It does seem that way, at least to me.


Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does Not owe you a living.

The post is pretty misleading. The government was out there plowing and snowblowing the roads. The police were closing roads and stopping traffic from driving into dangerous conditions. National Guard Humvees were rescuing people stranded in their cars. National Guard helicopters have been dropping hay to stranded cattle. The Governor declared the state a Federal Disaster area.

We've had about 50 inches of snow in the past 4 weeks. Not a snow plow has been seen on my street. Denver only plows the main thoroughfares. Driving on the side streets is a nightmare.

I’m thinking they are trying to compare it to all the mess that followed Katrina. I’m not sure you can really do that. I’m by no means belittling what has happened in CO. But, buried in snow is one thing. Everything gone, is yet another.

My brother lives up in Eagle. I go up at least once a month. You guys look like you got hit pretty hard. Good luck, and Godspeed to you all.

My sis lives just east of Denver. Though its a hardship, she says its not nearly as bad as the news makes it out to be. Anyway, being in your house in a snowstorm is not the same as being in your house in a flood.

anyone who thinks so is crazy, imho.

we get snow here too but never that much. it can be very bad but as noted above you are stuck in your house not trapped there and you can live there quite a while on what you have. a house filled with water or blown away is just not at all similar.

As an aside, I've been quite disappointed in the performance of my recently acquired 96 Suzuki Sidekick 4wd in this snow and ice. Even thought it's 4wd, it doesn't have positraction and the slightest ice or resistance to forward motion puts one of the rear wheels spinning even with studs in the all weather tires. It's sole advantage is its height as I bounce down the third world sidestreets of Denver.

The news stations are claiming the storm next weekend will dump 6ft of snow. Twice what the 06 Blizzard left us.

I dove a 99 Ford Ranger that did very well in 4x4 mode. D@mn near impossible to get that thing stuck when driving in 4x4 low range. Topped out at 35mph in low but I could crawl through or over any snow drift without getting stuck. *Almost* makes me think about buying a ford.

Does it have rear positraction? One of my tenants also has a 4x4 Ranger and he says the same thing. He says he doesn't have positration. How much does that Ranger weigh? The Sidekick is less than 3000lbs.

Even if we get half that amount, we'll be paralyzed for days given the current conditions here.

Some ski areas already have this sport, you're too late. I think they typically run the races as spring is approaching. Will a Wenonah beat an Old Town on the slopes as readily as it does on the water?

the side kick has relatively big tires i bet.

to go in snow you want relatively skinny tires with lots of weight to cut through the snow and grip the pavement below. wide tires and light weight and the truck will run up on the snow and slip.

so take the side kick and put on the skinniest snow tires that will fit and add 300# of sand bags in the back and you will go well.

on my big dodge, i just have 2wd with posi. and it is really nose heavy with that big 1200# cummins up there. but i add 700# of sand bags in back and i go pretty well.
