Just looking for a replacement to me air drill I just broke.

' DRILL' on eBay brings up over 16000 items...not all drills, but mostly.

Was thinking...how'd you know if this stuff isn't hot ?

Do you suppose the 'police' patrol eBay and the like, looking for hot items ?

..and what if you buy something that turns out to be stolen?

How do you know the stuff you bought at store is not hot? Or from anywhere for that matter.

You don't, but less unlikely, being as local store is bricks and morter vs anonimous ebay sellers..look at all the problems with eBay Motors vehicles.
Plus, our local Pawn Shops are updated by the police with latest list of stolen items and are visited by them too..

I wouldn't worry about it. You're not committing any crime buying stuff on ebay. Don't even give a thought, it's not really an issue of concern. Worry about cost and quality, that's what you should be focusing on.

Yep - That’s exactly what the cops (Sheriffs Department) told me when I found my stolen skis on eBay.
It wasn’t an issue to buy the stuff on an auction site, just to sell stolen goods on one. They also said it would be a good idea to always keep a copy of all the correspondence (emails, ebay msgs, etc) between you, eBay, PayPal, the seller, etc. when buying items you feel could be stolen. That way, if someone claims the item is theirs, your butt is covered.
i.e. Show where it came from, and you’re off the hook.

My skis were stolen (a few years back) from a rack at Beaver Creek. They even cut the cable lock and took it too. I found them (or what looked to be them) up for auction on eBay roughly two weeks later. I contacted the seller with some BS about how some of that particular model (a known SN span) of skis had an issue with edge separation and requested the SN on them to make sure they were the good ones. When the SNs matched that on my purchase receipt and insurance log, I called the PD where the seller was. They said it would be a Sheriffs Office issue, and to contact them. I did. They requested a fax of all may correspondence with the seller. No problem. Within 24 hours they had my skies in their hands. (I got the impression they had taken a lot of ski equipment from the guy that day.) My brother picked them up and had them sent to me UPS. The Sheriffs Office even covered the shipping as a “sign of appreciation“.

Yes - I did change my eBay User-ID after that.

I typically surf on ebay for electronic equipment (pro music gear, collectible home stereo components, etc.).

Every so often an item comes up where the item has numbers etched on the chassis that was subsequently sanded or scratched off. Normally, the seller discloses this, but the evidence seems suspiciously like a sale of a previously-stolen item. Buyer beware!

That is a bit simplistic. There is a legal term that basically means "you should have known". If a reasonable person would be suspicious then you do bear some responsibility. Further, if you buy something that was ever reported stolen, and then you sell it and it is then found to be stolen goods, you will be out the money and will be under the eyeball of the law which I trust you will not enjoy even if you are able to eventually prove your innocence. I think E-bay should have the same requirements that pawn shops have (in this state anyway), which is they have to check serial numbers against a database. I am sure they have no interest in this as it would hurt business.

Speaking as a employer who has dealt with employee theft, it's an issue to anyone who hates higher prices and having to keep valuable items locked up, thus hurting sales because some people are intimidated by locked display cases. Looking for a bargain is a double edged sword, because a seller of stolen items has NO investment and doesn't really care if it sells for below market prices.

Come on folks, if you see a seller selling all the parts of a motorcycle, except for the frame and engine cases, it's a sure bet that it's a stolen bike that's been stripped for parts. If you see a car with no keys, no title, and a low price, that's a sure sign it doesn't belong to the seller.

One other thing to look at when buying off ebay is if the deal is too good to be true then it probably is, but you can find deals for sure.

a few things to look for when buying on ebay...

1. Seller feedback. look at feedback, and look at items the seller has sold. a good reputation is usually a good sign you wont get screwed.

2. If the seller is stating in the auction text to e-mail directly and posts and e-mail address and says to not use the ask seller question link, I would be cautious. I found some seller who had his account hijacked. there was all of a sudden several high ticket items for sale that the seller was not usually selling. in the auction there was some text saying don't use the ask seller a question link, for some reason it is not working, e-mail me before you bid at this e-mail address. It also said I am tired of deabeats etc etc.

On a whim, I searched the e-mail address on google, and found a blog site that listed that e-mail address as a known scammer. I got on ebay's live help and told them the sellers id, and e-mail address and explained to them that I believed it was a hijacked account based on the facts that the account had only been selling one kind of item and all of a sudden it is selling all this high ticket electronics, and that the e-mail address was found on a list of known scammers and that the auction text was different and in a different style than any previous auctions the seller had on ebay. Needless to say the scam auctions were removed within minutes.

I sent the seller and e-mail through the ask seller a question link and he had no idea his account had been compromised, and was thankful I saved his account reputation from being ruined by a scammer who would have taken peoples money and the seller woudl have gotten poor feedbacks that he did not deserve as he was a victim himself.

So lesson be learned here is to never click on any e-mail claiming it is from ebay, paypal or the likes with a link asking to confirm or update information etc. If you get an e-mail like that delete it. if you think the e-mail is legit, simply open a new browser window and go tot he site by typing the address in yourself in the address bar for the site. never use a link in an e-mail.

3. Don;t worry about a few negative feedbacks, not many sellers are able to keep 100% satisfied people.
