Exerpt from Diamonds, Gold and South Africa:

The diamond empire of De Beers is now one of about 600 companies associated with "South Africa Inc." (officially called The Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, 44 Main Street, Johannesburg). Anglo American controls South African gold mines as well as diamond mines, and almost half the capitalization of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange represents companies owned or controlled by Anglo American.

This is what I am saying. You now have a lot of font instructions

Nothing new. Even if we leveled the field entirely, in 50 years, we will be back again. Why? Because some people work harder and are luckier than others. Give everybody only $1000 and sooner or later, you will have a millionaire again. Either that or no progress. Take your pick. Nam grew it's own rice till one year they had a bad harvest and had to import cheap rice to feed the people. Next year, the govt said the farmers could keep what profit they made. (Marx and Engles would be rolling in their graves). Next year they were EXPORTING a few tons of rice for sale and the next year and so on and so forth. Quite a few tons actually.

I acknowledge an honest mistake and or flaw in data processing.
I didn't think you'd play a sideline like this, but I never had this poping up when hitting the quote button.
I get it a lot recently while pulling up the edit option, but still it is inconsistent.

Could be your browser or the board software reacting with your machine. Who knows.

I had it when I quoted you and cut off some parts and missed other parts. You will see that it comes on and then off so you cannot see the effect. In your first one, the color was already black so no change was seen.

However to me it makes more of a difference to look at what it means to those young lives benefiting from Oprahs venture.

Honestly, I'm not too concerned about Oprah's increase in popularity, I don't watch that kind of stuff, neither before nor after.

I suppose it does benefit somebody. I do wonder tho, we have enough kids here who have problems of their own. Crack babies and disabled people and retarded people, etc, etc. If you are like Hattie and say you don't want to give money to those who are not deserving, there are plenty that honestly need the help. Therefore to me, while you are right that it benefits someone, I think of it mostly as a plea for attention. Sounds more glamourous than if she built something for say the paralyzed or the crippled, etc, etc.

This is old stuff, not that I want ot sway off subject, but then I get a tickle out of the "justice issue" even though not quite social .... while $10million are probably a sneeze in the wind.

Plus interesting again, the conspiracy aspect, for all those who think conspiracies only exist in our fantasies.

DE BEERS CENTENARY AG PLEADS GUILTY TO PRICE-FIXING INDICTMENT
Sentenced to Pay $10 Million Fine for Conspiring to Fix Industrial Diamond Prices

WASHINGTON, D.C. - De Beers Centenary AG pled guilty today and was sentenced to pay a $10 million criminal fine to resolve a longstanding indictment for conspiring to fix the price of industrial diamonds in the United States and elsewhere, the Department of Justice announced.
The plea agreement, which resolves the Department's 1994 indictment, was filed today in U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio.
In 1994, a federal grand jury in Columbus, Ohio indicted De Beers Centenary for conspiring to raise list prices of various industrial diamond products worldwide in 1991 and 1992. De Beers' alleged co-conspirator, General Electric, was tried and acquitted by the district court on this charge. De Beers Centenary, headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland, was not tried on the charge because the court lacked jurisdiction over the company. As a result of the plea agreement filed today, De Beers Centenary has consented to the jurisdiction of the court to resolve this case.
Diamond tool manufacturers use industrial diamond products in cutting and polishing tools for a variety of manufacturing and construction applications, including road construction, stone cutting and polishing, automobile manufacturing, mining, and oil drilling.
In entering the plea agreement, De Beers Centenary admitted that it reached agreements with its co-conspirator to raise list prices for certain industrial diamond products sold worldwide, as charged in the indictment. In furtherance of the conspiracy, officers, employees and agents acting on behalf of DeBeers had communications and discussions with, attended meetings with, and transmitted detailed future pricing information and plans to its co-conspirator. According to the plea agreement, De Beers Centenary and its co-conspirator sometimes used the cover of an officer of a customer, who was actually acting on behalf of De Beers Centenary, to transmit detailed future pricing information and plans to each other.
"This guilty plea reflects the Department's persistence in the fight against illegal price fixing," said R. Hewitt Pate, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department's Antitrust Division. "Although jurisdictional issues prevented the Department from litigating the charge against De Beers Centenary for a decade, this plea indicates our commitment to seeing justice prevail."
De Beers Centenary and a number of interrelated firms, including De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd., owned or controlled various companies that manufactured, distributed and sold industrial diamonds in the United States and elsewhere. Industrial diamonds are manufactured by applying extremely high pressure and temperature to carbon-rich material to transform it into diamond.
De Beers Centenary was charged with violating Section One of the Sherman Act, which, at the time the offense was committed, carried a maximum penalty of a $10 million fine for a corporation. The maximum statutory fine may be increased to twice the gain derived from the crime or twice the loss suffered by the victims of the crime, if either of those amounts is greater than the Sherman Act maximum.

Cool *** Wniooby? ***

Why not in our own back yard?

Why not in Darfur?

Orca gots her money...leave her alone.

Geez, we gave it to her. Now we want to direct her on how she should spend it? (WHOOOOO! Starting to sound like the government here! )

Have her dump her cash on lottery tickets...the state of (Insert State of choice here) gets its share, the schools/social program gets its mini-share and the operations running the scam gets their cut. And the religious-right get all torn-up about it.

Orca may win a on a few tickets, but she doesn't need all that money. We've decided that already.

Here's what I think Hammertime is all bent about...

He is (As well as I am...), sick of seeing, ad-nauseum, ALL THE F***ING PRESS STORIES ABOUT THE "SECOND COMING" OF ORCA THE BEAUTIFUL...

The story is: Orca gives money to build a "girls' only" school for African kiddies. What about the little African boys?

What famous black-American male is going to build that school?

Or, why didn't Orca be all-inclusive and make the school co-ed?

Now there's where the story needs to go.

Just like the Don Hendly song "Dirty Laundry" goes, "Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down, kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around..."

Let the frenzy-feeding begin...

Just saying that she isn't doing it for the sake of helping needy kids. Just doing it because it brings more fame and fanfare than if she were to help the local kids, tax writeoff, etc, etc.
